Thanks for the inspiration Playful Pony. So like his/her pistol thread we are doing the same thing for assault rifles/carbines. Just to clarify, this also applies to real world rifles. So to start:

RW: The oh so sexy G36

Fictional: The Aliens pulse rifle

Not exactly rifles, but categorized as ones in ME3
Semi-auto assault grenade rifle M-37 Falcon

And automatic assault grenade rifle Striker

My favorite weapons from MP
With Striker I was heavy hitter (one full clip from a point blank range could bring down Brute or Cerberus mech on Silver)
I really wanted for M-37 Falcon to be reclassified as a shotgun, so that I could bring both of these weapons into fight.

Closest real world counterpart to M-37 Falcon would be South African PAW-20

Can't go wrong with the Gears of war lancer.

My favourite real life rifle would be the SAR-21.

Fantastic bullpup rifle.

Oh that's an easy choice, it's always gonna be one assault rifle that'll show a bit of the old national pride.

Always gonna be the L85A2, very rarely do I see a gun and think it's genuinely a fine looking piece of craftsmanship, but the L85 just looks fantastic and in every game it's ever been in, feels fantastic to shoot. It's always characterised by a slightly lower rate of fire balanced out by lethal, laser beam accuracy which suits my playstyle down to a T.

Would genuinely love to get my hands on one and squeeze off a couple rounds for real.

I'm going to be really miffed when people start coming into this thread and posting rifles that aren't assault rifles because they don't know the difference.

Having said that, I've always been a fan of the Tar 21.

Not really because of any game or movie, but because the gun just appeals to me on an aesthetic level.

I have a thing for bullpup rifle designs. It's not a pretty gun by any means, but it isn't supposed to be, it's not an elegant weapon, it's a weapon for the battlefield, it looks like it can take a lot of punishment and deal out even more. Sadly I haven't had a chance to shoot one.

On the other hand, if you'd asked me this a few years back I would have said the Steyr AUG, but having shot one I was incredibly disappointed with its performance (damn thing jammed on me 4 times in 20 rounds), so shooting the Tar 21 might not leave as favorable an impression on me as I would hope.

The truth is, I've shot my share of assault rifles, but I've never really enjoyed them all that much. I always prefer their civilian semi-automatic sport rifle counterparts.

My personal favorite is Borderlands' Punishing Cobra. I still haven't found the ideal version, but have thoroughly enjoyed the many hours spent looking.

I think this is the closest I've gotten-

I have wondered for some time is it possible to turn TAR-21 into belt fed machine gun?
I mean using Ares "Shrike" style dual feeding system
In theory it should be possible, but how viable such weapon would be?

Yeah, I'm going to have to say the Steyr AUG. It's pretty iconic, nowhere near as iconic as the Kalashnikov or the M16 series, but you've probably seen this weapon many times before.

I just really like the aesthetics of bullpup guns so much.

And there's the relatively new Magpul Masada. Never shot it, wish I can one day. Its appearance is similar to FN Herstal's SCARs, and I think the SCAR is already a pretty cool gun in its own right.

Yeah, I've had that experience with ARs. The first time I shot an AR-15 it jammed. After clearing the jam, it jammed again. After clearing that, it jammed on the fourth shot and I gave up.

The Kalashnikov I shot a little later didn't jam, but half of a Kalashnikov's reputation is on it seldom malfunctioning. Just, you know, the ammunition is crazy expensive.

I'm going to be boring and say an AK-47/74/AKM. I'm not really that into guns personally, but I cannot even attempt to deny how badass the Communists made their weapons look and how iconic they are.

The Halo assault rifle. I really like the look of it for some reason.

I can vouch for the airsoft version's effectiveness in combat, given I went up against someone with one and my team lost every match that day.

For real life weaponry, I've tend to like the look of bull-pup assault rifles, the FN-2000

and the TAR-21

And when it comes to fiction I like the M-41A
and the Zorg ZF-1 (standard paint job is fine, bit I'd prefer an Arctic or traditional green cammo paint job)

You need to show the entire demonstration video with the ZF-1.

And the OP stated it was real world weapons that he wanted.

deletes next few examples

I would have to say the G36 for a successful rifle and the G11 for a prototype, both by Heckler & Koch.

Its so boxy!

In real life I always fucking loved the way the Scar series looked:

Fictionally I always enjoyed the Gears of War lancer, something about that chainsaw is so unique...

The Aliens pulse rifle is still fucking amazing, though it's been mentioned before.

Also the Halo assault rifle still feels nice and functional.

I'll always hold some love for the Peacemaker Carbine:

Aside from the added benefit of being pretty much the only weapon in Bulletstorm to give you an effective Dick-shot (without taking off their Torso), there's also the power of the secondary fire which fires 100 compressed bullets a single shot of penetrating doom, stripping the flesh of anything unfortunate enough to be line infront of it reducing your enemies to a pile of bone dust.

Also comes in a variety of colours such as Gold, Flames, Partially-Invisible and Flaming Tits!

I know what you mean, I'm going to go for the Austeyr for similar reasons. (Though it's a slightly modified AUG)

Or, excepting that it fires a full power round, and has no automatic fire (in theory), the SLR, which gets lumped in with assault rifles.

I've always been a huge fan of the AUG variants as well actually, particularly the A3, it's just a really nicely designed gun, same goes to the SLR and all its variants, although as you say, only gets lumped in with assault rifles, really more of a battle rifle, but still.
