Exactly what is says on the tin. Pick a game you could consider to be the "Best Game Ever" and give reasons why. It can be any video game, from any time period and on any system.

Also, only 1 choice per post (and please don't just spam double posts for all your choices).

And one more thing- Each person needs to pick their own.

My submission: Canabalt. (Can be played at http://www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/)

1. It's got one of the simplest and easiest to understand control layouts of all time.

2. It has an awesome sountrack.

3. The graphics are incredibly fluid and beautifully animated.

4. The story isn't force-fed to you. In fact, it's barely there at all, just background to the gaming experience.

5. It's compulsively addictive, and you'll keep coming back.

6. It's streamlined. There isn't anything there that doesn't need to be there.

7. It's free to play, which is always a bonus. There is also a downloadable iPhone version.

Seriously? As far as I can tell it has one button (although they don't really seem to mention the control scheme anywhere). Also, it looks like it's from the 80s or so, but unlike games that are actually from that era, this game has done nothing to shape the gaming industry and does not provide a sense of nostalgia. I wouldn't want to call it a bad game, because I think it succeeds at what it was trying to do, but how anyone would ever say it is the best game ever is beyond me.

Now, feel free to shoot on my best game ever, Baldur's Gate 2:
- It's huge
- Nice and deep companions
- Lots of (good) story/stories (counting the extremely deep side missions)
- Lots of freedom
- Deep character development system
- Strategic and varied combat
- Lots of different, interesting environments
- Nice art
- Extensive modding community
- Humor

Portal 2:
-Great story
-Co-op is fantastic
-Great quirky humor
-mindbending puzzles
-Near original game mechanics(Narbacular Drop came up with the idea)
-Let me play Steam online when one couldn't on PSN
-A strange sort of atmosphere
-Decent soundtrack

I don't really think many of my games deserve the title "Best Video Game Ever", because they're not. But out of the games I've played, Portal 2 left me the most satisfied.

It's personal opinion, and you can use any criteria. I was just trying to avoid picking something like Fallout or Deus Ex with thousands of columns of numbers and instead pick something a lot simpler and purer.

Depending on what wins in my mind:

Tetris - clever puzzle concept and is possible the game more people have played than any other.

Betrayal At Krondor - great plot, characters, fun tactical combat with a big world to explore. I wish more RPGs like this (obviously updated with graphics/sound/combat options)

I would say Oot, but that game recieves so much praise it would be pointless for me to rag on about how good it is (which it is).

To go with something more original, I will say Chrono Trigger. I still haven't played Chrono Cross. I really need to get on that, don't I.

The World Ends With You.

-one of the best soundtracks on of all time
-super fun gameplay once you get the hang on it
-Amazingly cool anime and graffiti visural desing
-Awesome story. I never saw the ending coming
-Likeable, is sometimes annoying characters
-lots of funny lines and side 'quests'

I'm not sure is it's the best game of all time, but for me it saw as hell comes close.

I would have said an RPG or something but since it should be creative...

Supaplex.

It's free, it's fun, it could fit on a floopy (if they were still used), very challenging but not impossible, you can play it at any age, there are a lot of levels and even more made by fans.

Planescape: Torment

-Same engine as Baldur's Gate 2
-Amazing and fleshed out sci-fi fantasy world
-The dialogue in the game was amazing
-The combat and ability to switch classes through the game was great
-Every single NPC is well-fleshed out and endearing in their own way, there was not a single NPC that I thought was poorly written or hammed in

Actually... Dak'kon, Morte, Annah

Really, it could've just had them and I'd be okay. Also, it really felt like one of the last few games to have a heart and soul. It didn't immerse you with flashy graphics and dolby digital sound quality, it did it with a lot of attention to detail, interesting questing and a storyline you felt truly invested in.

IMO its gotta be ar tonelico qoga
1. the bgm changes based on the heroines state in battle
2. you blow shit up with songs
3. engaging story
4. each heroine has a sort of text based adventure that you can use to make em stronger
5. getting the heroines naked is an effective battle strategy more skin showing = mana absorption rate
6. uniqe art style using 2d background and 3d models in town and isometric 3d in dungeons

Only one choice? Arghh....

I'll take Super Metroid

-It's very atmospheric, with each area having it's own distinctive look and feel
-It offers new abilities slowly and one at a time so that players can learn them
-Has some of the best graphics on the SNES
-Exploration is not only rewarded, but required, with the abilities opening up new and different areas
-There's no distracting chatter. It's just you, Samus, and Zebes

My personal "Best Game Ever" has to go to Chrono Trigger.

-The Story is absolutely amazing, and it has many many different endings
-The Soundtrack is pretty good
-The concept of traveling time works very well in the game
-Probably the single best RPG of it's time, and would give any current game a run for it's money
-Magus.

I may get some hate for this but I would have to go with Golden Sun, engaging story great characters, and it's nice to an rpg that doesnt try to get to fancy with its battle system and pretty much sticks to basics.

I have to say the best video game ever is...Majora's Mask

What it did was take the wonder and fantasy of Ocarina of Time and show the...darker side. It confronted themes of growing up, love, loss, inevitability, and death. All that, and it still manages to be the magical adventure game you expect from any in the Zelda series.

Plus, the Three Days concept, playing them over and over...I don't know, but it's just so unique and fun to manipulate that I can't help but put this game higher than any other.

Max Payne. Amazing gameplay, deep story, great voice acting, still holds up even to this day, yep.
I was partial to Tom Paine, (can be played at http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Tom_Paine), which is also my creative choice for... Best. Game. Ever.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2, still has pretty epic multiplayer battles, and the star wars goes well with the Battlefield esque classes.

Also trying to avoid something like Fallout 3 or other obvious blockbusters, I'd go with Bully (Canis Canem Edit).

- It has a great story and a unique setting that has a timeless feel to it
- It's graphics are extremely fitting and stylish and the environments are appealing and charming
- All side quests and odd jobs are fun and character customization is more detailed and rewarding than in most other sandbox games
- The voice acting is great and the young actors fit their characters extremely well
- Everything in this game adds to the experience, it never gets repetitive, it is fun, engaging and very unique and original - especially considering the fact that it's a sandbox game from Rockstar

Playing this game just makes me feel good. I actually think that out of all the games I've ever played this is the game that comes closest to perfection on its own terms.

Good choice, I'm torn between this and Grim Fandango. BG2 for the same reasons as you, Grim Fandango for the style, humour, writing, it's the pinnacle of LucasArts adventure games.
