Probably the fear demo, you got only a small part of the storyline did get a fright or two and it showed off the combat really well.

Maybe, just maybe demos are showing people what they want. I know I'm being cynical here, but maybe people have stopped caring for setting, characters, plot and immersion. Maybe all customers want is "claws and teeth".

Sounds crazy but the latest Sonic game demo made me buy it....

The demo made it look like it was just what sonic needed, it was fast, fun and crazy like days of old but in a slightly different format (The demo features just a day instance of running like a mad hedgehog!). Unfortunately the game doesnt live up to this and bored the crap out of me :(

Still, that demo succeeded in getting a sale! It now stays on my 360 as the bit of fun the full game should've been!

The best demo i've played recently was Overlord.

It was about half an hour long, told me the basics of the story, then i got to control a few minions and throw a few fireballs.

What was also good, they had an add at the end showing a whole bunch of cool clips for the game, so i really wanted to buy it.

Yah, I miss the good old days of the demo. You'd think they'd at least make the level the first level because that'll be the one that trains you how to work everything, but no. Nowadays, demos are just the most attractive sections of the game.
I miss the Good Old Days of The Demo TOO...(sobbing)....
My last Demo I played that was good was The Wolverine Origins Demo, and before that.............Other then Bio Shock.....I have no idea. I Usually play the Demo before I buy the game, but now I not sure I should bother.
As for why the Demo level is not always the first Level,Probably because they game developers want to show off something in the game.
I don't know about every body else but, I do not like the Demo if it just has good graphics are a lot of action. If I don't like the demo I don't get the game even if it has a good rating. However if it is recommended by my friends,I will rent it and give the game a second shot of impressing me.
I just would think that since the Demo is the first time you get to play the game,The game would Put It's Best Foot Forward(I mean that metaphorical you literal nincompoops!).

I think this is a greatly written article first of all.
Secondly, I have to agree with you, the last time I truly played a demo without knowing about the game was back in the old days of the Official Playstation Magazine and they were the reason why I bought many of the games I had.
In recent times the only demo that properly fulfilled the purpose of a demo was Valves Lost Coast demo. OK it wasn't for the purpose of demoing Half-Life 2, but it made me interested in their next release as it showed off some new mechanics they were giving a try and lo and behold, I bought the episode pack.
It seems developers really are starting to lose their way and must unashamedly look up to Valve once again.

Recent good demo: Red Faction guerilla multiplayer demo I had no intrest in the game but now i have it reserverd. Destroying buildings, rebuilding buildings, and best of all ROCKETS in peoples skulls.

Older Good demo: Phantasy star universe, not a great game but it gives you almost all the content for a whole month. After that though you have to make a new character.

I'd have to say it was inFAMOUS's demo if having it pre-ordered already counts if not then I'd say it was Valkyria's Demo i must of played it over 15 times no story in it but it showed a clip reel and let you see a cast of characters to pick from..

I totally agree, Shamus.

I think the last good demo I played was Tomb Raider Underworld. But I use the word "good" loosely there. It was "good enough" to confirm that I wanted to buy the game. But if I wasn't already interested, I don't think it would have sucked me in.

Last demos that convinced me to buy the game:
1) Battlefeild: Bad Company (PS3)
The demo offered a single player mission similar to a section the first mission of the actual game, but not 100% Identical. did a good job of outlining the controls, and showing how a game like Battlefeild cab be pulled off in console format. it introduced the characters well (who's humour was one of the main selling points for me.) demonstrated the destructible environment mechanics, and ended on a plot twist that sets you up for the story of the complete game.
Also from memory, they offered a single online campaign. which both demonstrated the new multiplayer mode ('Gold rush' rather than 'Capture the outposts') and allowed EA/Dice to Beta test online play.
A Good Demo

2) Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
offered one race track that showed a good variety of terrain types. and 2 playable vehicles classes out of the 13 in the game (and that you're racing against in the demo). gives you a taste, while making you want more.
Also offered 2 player split-screen mode. My housemate and I sunk hours into that demo.
Another good example, although, Racing games tend not to have much of a Plot to demonstrate.

I don't understand why people hated the Resident Evil 5 demo. When I finally got the game I could say "hey here's that part from the demo" and it would play exactly the same.

I agree that the demo was thin on story, but Resident Evil 5 didn't really have any story to speak of until chapter 4, and even then it was just a short wrap up of the main storyline, which I personally thought they did very well.

I think the demo was mainly for people to just see how it played, so fans of the series new that they were getting into, and so newcomers could see if they liked the controls.
I agree with this, though I felt like everyone else that Resi 5 was utterly underwhelming compared to RE4. I'd also add that everyone else seems to have completely missed the fact that RE5's demo was in two parts. Sure you had the timed arena section, but you also had the later level section that ended with the chainsaw mini-boss. In addition, for RE5 one of the main draws for Resi fans was the story, so understandably Capcom didn't really want to give anything away.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with games primarily showing off gameplay elements instead of story in demoes. For me, gameplay always comes first in deciding whether I'm going to enjoy a game. Story is also very important in a game, but no matter how good the story is I'm not going to play anything if the core elements aren't in place. Unless a demo ends on a particularly intriguing cliffhanger (like Bioshock's, which is also one of the few games which has a seamless blend of story and gameplay which rivals... everything from any media, actually!) which works within a game's gameplay context then I'm not going to be impressed by it.

Bioshock and Mirror's Edge, I think, were the demos that made me want to play the full game. They were good demos, especially Bioshock.

Answer: Patapon 2. It gave you the first couple levels of the game, which, if played all at once, equals about 30 minutes, but the save data and progress from the demo carries over into the full game. So, I ended up investing 8 hours into that demo before I got the retail game. There were no limits placed on what you could do in the demo, except that the number of levels available was small. Still, because the levels in Patapon 2 are always changing with each successful playthrough, the levels are all infinitely replayable.
