Today I received my 2Tb external Hard Drive that I order via eBay ($120AU). I'm currently waiting for all the stuff on my 1Tb to copy over to it (the 1Tb is a laptop hdd and therefore portable so it makes sense to have everything on the larger, not-so-portable hdd). Thing is, it has so far taken 3 hours and my computer estimates it to take 2 more, just to copy my 271.88GB of Movies. I still have TV Shows (got over 350GB there), anime (roughly 100GB) as well as music, web series, some random applications (like photoshop, final cut etc) and my Uni stuff. All up I have roughly 900GB of data I am attempting to copy over. This may take a while.

Before anyone says anything, yes I DO need all this stuff :p. So I figured I'd ask if any other Escapists have done what I am currently doing and how much digital media do you actually have and keep?

I have yet to do a mass transfer of that degree, but I recently got a new desktop and had to move a lot of data from an older one to my new one. I think it took about 10 gigs of music about 30-45 minutes to transfer everything (most was wirelessly transferred(over network), but some of my newer songs had to be taken by flash drive). I think in total I have in the range of 100-200 gigs of digital media.

Stuff like anime and movies usually get burned to a disc
<These are actually quite handy.

Music and such usually get copied to smaller units, like 4-10GB USB sticks or something. The things i keep on my external harddrive is usually stuff i haven't watched that i had to move 'cause i needed more space on my computer. (And, yes... i do keep everything sorted in a tidy manner)

I have a 350 GB and a 320 GB, both internal.

The 320 has about 1 GB of self taken pictures. The 350 is 100% full of Steam goodness.

It will take a while. I know from experience.

I have 1.2 Tb hdd memory. And I want more. Last time I updated my computer I thought about buying two 2Tb drives but I thought I was exaggerating a bit. Now I'm not so sure.

In the age of truly broadband internet, I never burn data on DVD's/CD's anymore. I can usually redownload things I want in a matter of an hour or two, not to mention most of Anime series are not worth rewatching.

I didn't know this was like a tech support forum
It is called off topic for a reason.

OT: I have a 1TB external drive, 2 500GB mobile drives for school (video editing and a back up drive) as well as a couple hundred DVD's.

One of my 500's is almost full, I need to clean it up. I actually don't have too much in the forms of movies or anime right now... I've mostly been owning DVD's.

Oh and as for your question OP, I've never dealt with copying over that many files. It would be better to split up the work so if it fails, you don't have to start all of it over again.

Been using HD's as portable disks for a LONG time now. I don't use the prebuilt externals, as its usually cheaper to just buy a drive and an enclosure and put it together. I have around 6 terabytes dedicated to storage. Mostly for bringing work home, JOY! And if your transfering your files via USB2.0 then thats why its taking so long. eSata or USB3.0 are much nicer for transfering over huge amounts of data. Also partly the reason why I like aftermarket drive enclosures as well, most of the prebuilts don't have eSata. Also when you do large data transfers be careful about where you have the external drive. Some cases don't do much to keep the hard drive cool, you can burn them out during a 4-6 hour transfer if there isn't adiquate airflow around it.

I have a terabyte in my gaming box, which is rapidly filling with games, and two terabytes in my media server, which is full of movies, music and anime, and presently has about 600 gig left available. I'll buy another two terabytes for it soon.
For portability, my netbook has 320 gig, and I have a few 100 gig portable drives and a bunch of 8 gig USB keys.
