Do you remember dial-up internet? Do you remember those days in which pictures of things took ages to load and Macromedia Flash was a *****? Geocities, alt.usenet, Napster and logo on fire? Of course you do! That Nirvana poster on your wall while you played Doom online! Those days when trolling was actually cool and ICQ was the popular instant messenger. The people that were old enough at the time had homepages and stuff like that

What do you remember most fondly of the pre-memetic internet era?
Probably one of the funniest things I saw back in the day was this:

Nintendo.com, which at the time was known as "The Power House"

I signed up for the boards when I was like... 9 or 10? Good times...

Can't forget browsing said site on the Netscape browser, and using infoseek to do all my web searches... It was the only one that had a search within search feature... I still say it was the best web search to date.

I do remember all the browsers being much more squared then they are today, now most of them are rounded for some reason. Other than that I don't remember that much apart from the odd computer game I used to play like rugrats adventures or something like that.

Oh god Dial Up. It's a good thing I wasn't old enough to care about forums back then because if you sent me a picture via email it took HOURS to load it.

As shitty as my net is now, I'm never going back.

As for my activities? Well I joined Facebook in... 07 I think. Was addicted to it for a fair bit, made a second account for roleplaying. When I started posting here I RP'd less and less on FB until I got rid of that account and joined this community :D

Prior to Facebook there was a lot of random Youtube in Highschool, flash game sites like Onemorelevel and Addictinggames as well as Maidmarion.com. That's about it actually.

Yay RatherGood.com!

My favourite is this one:

But this one comes close:

I actually don't remember much about the internet pre-2002-ish, probably because we only had AOL's terrible web-browser thing. I do remember using 'AOL Keywords' to look at things like Harry Potter though, and not being allowed to go on Google because the parental settings blocked it.

EDIT: Wait. There was Runescape! I spent a lot of time on Runescape...

I remember looking up cheats for Pokemon, horrific loading times, shitty flash games, pirating like there was no tomorrow and those horrible user names everybody had. You know the ones with Xx or their year of birth at the end.

I used to love brunching shuttlecocks.com and it was oh so very nice before IGN came out of nowhere to swallow up every gaming site on the internet. At that time, Gamespy and it's humor articles were my home on the internet. (you might know them as "that place penny arcade came from" or where "that guy who got hired by blizzard did flintlocke".)

I remember when peophins were limited edition.
Jesus Christ, what happened to you, Neopets? D:

Really, though, other than tangential exposure through friends being interested in flash videos, the animes, free MMOs (which were usually quite bland or bandwith-hogs then) and petsites, I really didn't have anything to do with the internet until college, where I got something better than the haunting buzzes and screeches of dial-up...

Oh, wait, I also liked to look up glitches for pokemon and pictures of pretty birds and flowers.
But other than that, really not much.

Remember the early days of the internet?

I remember the time BEFORE the internet arrived in our houses. No mobile phones, no internet and Atari 2600 was considered the master of gaming ..... oh, and flares were cool.

I was never really a HEAVY internet user until 07 when I got my first laptop, but I do remember using the internet WAAAAY before that in 2001-2002.

Back then there was a family desktop that was rarely used and I very rarely when on it, but I primarily just when on cheat code sites (cheatcc.com I think it was back then...) and tried EB game's website to find game release dates.
A bit later on in 04-05 or something my friend got a computer and when I went to his house he'd occasionally show me a funny video and it was the first time I had seen internet porn.

Oh, and Runescape when it first came out, but we don't talk about that game.

I remember being a mad role-player. I was roleplaying on a dragon ball z roleplaying forum and a generic fantasy forum. Which I found thanks to the neopets roleplaying forum. Only thing was back then there were ridiculous amounts of people who wanted to do 'teen' roleplays which descended into cybering.

I still remember when it use to take 3 hours to download a 5 minutes Red Vs Blues episodes (you won't won't believe how long it took for a longer episode).
When I did get to use broadband in University I was blown away at how fast it was (and pretty much lead me to using the internet everyday).

A dial up modem and Freeserve. Picking up the phone disconnected you, sites took minutes to load and pop-up blockers were almost unheard of.

I remember using yahoo to look for stuff. I even remember the first website I went on myself (it was an action man website).

Back the I mainly just played games and watched flash movies. I hadn't discovered youtube or anything so popular. I think my first proper site I had an account on was Neopets and Lego.com
I have since meta-morphed from an internet caterpillar to a web browsing super butterfly, especially with my account on here.
