For fighting the Elite Four pokemon don't matte ras long as I have a
Fire Type
Electric Type
Fighting Type
Water Type
Psychic Type
Wild card.

Usually I have double ups as well like a Grass/Fight or a Water/Ice so I have a back up if one goes down. Also I grind up to everything around level 45 that way I can 1 hit everything with their respective super effective or nearly 1 hit anyway.

The last two games I got to Elite Four on were Ruby and Pearl. Respectively, my teams were:

Blaziken
Groudon
Salamence
Walrein
Plus two other random pokemon, usually one with an exp share.

Infernape
Floatzel
Alakazam
Staraptor
Palkia
Weavile

A funny trend I found. If I take my starter (it actually doesn't matter which one) and use it exclusively, it will be ridiculously overpowered by the end and, with a balanced range of moves, can annihilate the elite four single-handedly. The others are just there to look pretty.
Same here. At the very least, I can take down about 3-4 of them before having to switch to whatever the 'mystic/hidden/ancient/super' pokemon of that particular game, like Mewtwo, Ho-oh, etc.

So I really only need two, max.

On HeartGold I am using:-

Meganium
Ampharos
Magmar
Poliwhirl (soon to be Poliwrath)
Hypno
Graveller (soon to be Golem)

Haven't really played I much though so they are very under-levelled for the elite four, all of them are around 32-ish.

I just got up to the elite 4, and i'm using:
feraligator
mamoswine
scither
electrode
gyrados
dragonair

at the moment, all level 37-40.
I decided against using my ho-oh and entei... I was using my other six as my team throughout the game.

Ampharos
Typhlosion
Lugia
(Red) Gyarados

Their levels were 35-50.

Those were the ones I used; the other two were just random placeholders...

Playing Heartgold now,
my current party consists of

Feraligatr
Growlithe
Magneton
Pigeot
Graveler
Kadabra

I can basically counter every single pokemon.
And the best part is, I caught them all damn early in the game.
HeartGold has not enough good pokemon.

Same here, I have been using that tactic since Generation 1. lol

Charizard, level 96
Swampert, level 89

*I DON'T NEED A SIXTH*

I think my Ruby playthrough was something like

Kyogre

I did a lot of trading and legendary hunting in my younger days.

I've spent about 30 hours playing Soul Silver the 'correct' way, with a full team, and it's fun, obviously. But I used to play with only my starter and a team of two HM slaves and some lv 5's I caught way back in the beginning. See, I swap one of those out when Typhlosion dies, rev and Voila! Alternatively, if a dude is about to use earthquake or something crazy powerful, swapping works well there too.
You finish the game in about ten hours that way, too...

Man I used to have the full 151 in my Pokemon Red, I was crazy addicted, mind you this was when I was 10-11. Got it all legitimately too, had a friend who I set up the three starters with, I got a Mew back in 2000 back when Pokemon was HUGE and they had some huge gathering in my City, I think it was related to the movie, but a friend took my cartridge in and I bagged it.

Everything else I got through trading and a ton of work. Wish I still had that save...mad bragging rights...

Bah, you can all keep your rubbish parties. The best party is one that consists entirely of Magikarp. Well, 5 Magikarp and a slave ***** to use Cut and stuff. I'll get back to you if I actually manage to defeat any of the stronger people.
..

..

..

I'm guessing that they won't
