I can already hear the voices about to yell out in anger, and the sounds of catapults and trebuchets being loaded. Yes, it's a topic about the Vita: the latest gaming toy to make us wonder how relevant portable gaming still is. Everybody seems to be riding the hate train when it comes to the Playstation Vita, but the anger seems misguided. I'm not asking do you like it or hate it, i'm just asking what your personal experience with the device has been.

I bought a Vita about a year ago, probably around june or july. I played with it a bit as i bought Uncharted: Golden Abyss with it, and when i had beaten that i started to mess around with some of the other features. I tinkered with the remote play feature, and at a few points even used it to play some old PS1 games through the remote play on my vita. trying to get this feature to work in a public setting however is horrendously difficult, especially since the 3G version still has yet to come here to Canada, and probably won't at this point. (and even if it does it's data plans will be absolutely ridiculous because of our data monopoly)

Other than that i played a bit with near, some other social network features, and of course the free-to-play games that they had to release to tide people over. But so far, after a year of owning it, i seldomly use it. i've only ever played 3 games on it; Uncharted, Treasures of Montezuma, and Motorstorm RC (the latter two of which were free to download). whenever i do pick up my vita, i just play montezuma to compete scores with my brother and his girlfriend but that's about it. i recieved Ninja Gaiden as a gift for christmas and still haven't so much as started it once. I once took the vita with me somewhere to use the cameras on it, but when i hooked it up to my computer to loook at them, surprise surprise, the image is the same on the computer screen as it is on your vitas; incredibly low-res. which brings me to my next point, the synchronization -- OH CHRIST! trying to plug this into my computer and transfer files is too much of a hassle for me to want to put anything on the expensive, over-crowded memory card it has.

The thing is though, i love the vita, and i still do. it is a very interesting piece of technology, it performs very well (for the most part, i have had a few crashes randomly)and i think it has a lot of potential to be more than it is. It holds a parallel to the 3DS, in that it was hyped up, launched, got dismal sales, and then all attention was dropped towards in favor of the next big console. I'm standing here with my vita saying "what the fuck, i want more!". the games lineup is still mediocre, and not many apps and innovative ideas are being done with it.

TL;DR

VITA PROS:
- fast processing, quick interface
- applications for Facebook and Youtube are well-layed out and very comprehensive for a mobile device.
- more free-to-play games, with the possibility of more to come in the future.
- the motion-sensing, and touch pad mechanics in the games i've played so far (which keep in mind aren't many) are interesting ideas that bring a lot more to mobile gaming.
- Physically sturdy, i've dropped mine a million times. i ain't even mad.

VITA CONS:
- bad game library
- subject to random crashes (Blinking lights of death they're called, i've had to hard reset mine a few times)
- camera images are very low-res
- connectivity to other devices is a nightmare, taking me 6 times at one point to install the content manager on a new installation of windows.
- memory cards are ungodly priced, to this day i still only use a 4GB
- lack of adequate attention on Sony's part, i feel as if they promised more than they could deliver (large game lineup, certain titles coming to vita).

what was YOUR experience like?

OH! Where's shrekfan246!? He loves him some Vita :D

I have no experience with the Vita. I had the forum fight to the death [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.401242-Poll-The-3DS-or-the-Vita#16520824] between members of the Vita camp and members of the 3DS camp and while the fighting was vicious and brutal, the 3DS ended up winning. Both were systems I really wanted with great potential but the 3DS got the tie-breaker on the price tag.

I do intend to get a Vita eventually however...

I bought around last September and besides Mortal Kombat and Little Big Planet I just had nothing to play! So, Vita was dusting until November, when Persona 4: Golden came out, and immediately Vita was worth it. After that Vita just became better and better. With extensive library of PSP and PS1 games I can now replay my old favorites such as Dino Crisis 2, Persona 3: Portable, and Front Mission 3. I should note that I have no PS3 or, for that matter, any non-handheld console, and for me Vita is the only gateway to console gaming that I have (except lagging PS2 emulator) so I welcome all the enhanced ports that Vita gets (Dead or Alive 5+, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Atelier Totori etc).
In the end, my experience with the Vita was very positive indeed, but, if there's one thing that I wanna change or improve, it's fucking Vita web browser. That thing is so bad.

The only experience I've had was playing my friends, but it's been great. PSN really helps with the limited games, but playing P4G and Disgaea 3 the games looked gorgeous and the home screen was interesting and easy to navigate. I haven't played it enough for many negatives. I'm planning to get one the next time it goes on sale.

I've been sitting around waiting on the PS Vita to have games that are worth the $40 price tag to invest in. I've had a Vita since last summer and beyond borrowing games from others to try out, I only actually own Gravity Rush and Persona 3 Portable on the system. I thought I was going to preorder Soul Sacrifice at one point, but decided to try it first and found it wasn't what I was expecting.

If they could drop the PS+ subscription and give regular discounts like Steam, they'd have the handheld market cornered over the 3ds.

I'd say that 50 bucks for 15 months is more than a good deal. But then again, I'm also on a verge of subscribing for PS Plus, I'm just not sure if it's worth it just for Vita alone.

I absolutely love my Vita. I queued up for mine when it launched in Japan and was lucky enough to have more titles available to me shortly after launch compared to the US & Europe. Games which force you to use the touch screen and motion control in a gimmicky way I find obnoxious and downright frustrating. However, ones which seamlessly integrate them to enhance the experience really make for a much more pleasant experience. Case in point, Gravity Daze/Rush. The aim for the attacks is controlled by the right analogue stick but can be finely tweaked by moving the console. I really found this helped improve my accuracy with attacks in a very slick and easy manner. Likewise, the interactive comic strips in the story were fun and cleverly implemented.

What the Vita really needs is more exclusive games such as Gravity Rush and the newer release, Soul Sacrifice. When fully utilised it's such a powerful and impressive device. However, apart from buying old PSP & PS1 releases I find myself always short of games to play. The DS has thousands of titles nowadays and we have barely enough to fill a couple of shelves in a store.

Additionally, the apps for it need some improving. The NEAR system could have so much additional functionality and a much, much better interface. It has potential and did go through a small revamp but it needs a complete overhaul to allow Vita users really get the most out of finding each other via wifi.

The hardware itself has no complaints from me. The screen, buttons, feel, looks and battery life I find all outstanding. Proprietary chargers and memory cards are a slight inconvenience but not the end of the world and has always been Sony's way of doing things. If more developers could be persuaded to make content for this it really could wipe the floor with the DS. Sadly, I'm sure most people have already consigned it to the history books.

It's become a portable YouTube for me. Oh, and I love Gravity Rush and browsing the web on it. But that's all, it's not the most amazing handheld, the battery life is pathetic and boy don't you love having a good screen like that be a touch screen so it can collect finger prints? Also, I've only found the rear touch pad to be obnoxious and only good for online web page scrolling.

My overall verdict, I'm happy to own it and won't sale it, but as a gaming device I'd rather go with the 3DS. (Which I own)

The one problem they have with the service is that if a person stops paying, the customer loses access to a good number of games. They could probably rake in a lot more money and consumers using Steams method, which encourages people to buy games for it.

I saw this thread, but I was... erm... unavailable.

Yeah, we'll go with that. It sounds more interesting than the truth.

OT: Not that I want to be labelled and generalized or anything, but I love my Vita. Persona 4 Golden alone justified the price to me, then things like BlazBlue, Gravity Rush, Persona 3 Portable, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, LittleBigPlanet Vita, Final Fantasy IX, and Disgaea kept me from regretting it in the long-term. Then there's Muramasa: Rebirth and Dragon's Crown coming out in the next month or two, and Soul Sacrifice that I still have yet to pick up.

I do hope it gets more support in the coming months, but I've got so many other games to play in the meantime that it doesn't really bother me one way or the other... I've still got Of Orcs And Men and Lego Batman 2 to finish on PC before moving onto Dust: An Elysian Tail's PC version, which I think I'm going to type up a user review for since it's a game that I own twice now. Wait, I'm getting off-topic.

Honestly, I bought a vita at launch because I was excited about it and I really didn't use much my first year. I mostly used it for videos, Netflix (the psv app runs so well) and ps1 games when we eventually got them. But now, my vita backlog is actually my biggest. It's ironic because my experience has been the opposite of your's: I didn't use it much at first but still liked the concept, and now I use it a lot. I'm also looking forward to the indi games coming to it. There are a lot games I wouldn't have bought if they weren't on vita like Thomas was Alone and Machinearium.

So yeah, my experience has been good so far. Here's hoping for more cross play games and the ps4 stream to vita thing works

Pretty good. It hasn't had many games, but enough to keep me entertained, and the resolution and analog stick make it great for 3D PSP games like Kenka Banchou, which can be a bit cumbersome on the PSP itself.

I'll admit that I only really use mine sporadically, but that's true of most handhelds (I'm much more likely to kill time reading than gaming when I'm out of the house). I haven't had any hardware issues, and I have a couple upcoming titles on pre-order.

Honestly, though, I think I still prefer my PSP in a lot of ways.

One of my friends just lent me his vita and copy of Persona 4 Friday but so far I have been enjoying it though the library for the system does seem to mostly consist of games I already own but other then that no complaints. The menu's are fine the system seems sturdy so I'm considering getting one used since I only have a little money.

I love my Vita. It's the first handheld that is actually able to deliver smaller versions of console titles without sacrificing on gameplay, which is an awesome thing- I actually prefer the Vita version of Playstation All-Stars. I'm very excited about what could be done with it, there's a lot of potential in this sleek little black box.

Of course, I'll love the Vita more when/if it gets a more robust library- We're getting there, with Persona 4 Golden, Soul Sacrifice, Marvel vs Capcom, Gravity Rush, those Metal Gear Solid re-releases, and that massively underrated Silent Hill game- but we've still a ways to go before I'd honestly be able to recommend the thing to a majority of people

I love mine. I even have a backlog! I bought it for Gravity Rush and Soul Sacrifice, when the latter hadn't yet been released. While it wasn't the sort of game I was hoping for, it's still good, and the former is one of the finest gaming experiences I've ever had. They managed to craft a wonderful heroine, a compelling story, and a gorgeous world in Gravity Rush, and I don't regret my Vita for a second because of it. That's not all I play though, I've really enjoyed LBP, Unit 13, and Sound Shapes, and I've just bought P4 Golden and I'm looking forward to getting lost in it. I really do think it's a fantastic handheld, and I hope more people realise that, because it will collapse without third party support. I'm optimistic though, even if it does occupy a niche in the gaming world, it's got some great games and some more lined up for it later this year. I'd definitely recommend it.

Honestly, vita has almost everything I ever wanted with handheld.

Two analog sticks (I didn't want to buy PSP because of its lack of it), powerful enough to host home-console like games, OLED touch, L&R buttons that don't fall apart at slightest touch (looking at your NDS lite).

I bought it because what I saw is a future proof handheld.

I'm really digging LBP vita, P4Golden and classic PSP games like Patapon.

(Also having some giggles with this game called Men's Room Mayhem)

So Yes, I love my Vita. I know people say "There isn't enough games in Vita to justify my purchase" but I've gotten a lot out of it. Especially with PS+ subscription. I'm actually overwhelmed with my accumulating Vita backlog.

--

Cons: Not much for me really. A lot of cons that people say about vita are something I can endure..

But still.. high memory card price and game library is a problem that Sony needs to address. I certainly don't want to buy anymore digital copy of games until Sony drops the price to par with MICROSD cards.

I enjoy my Vita, I think PS+ helps though. There have been a glut of quick and fun indie games lately, in fact the indie games are just great anyway. For me they are one of the saving graces of the device. The memory card swapping is still a nuisance, even though I had enough of it and bought the biggest card they had its only 32GB. Not to mention it hammered my wallet, the memory cards are still too small and too expensive.

Actually I believe Sony are hurting themselves with the way they handle memory cards, they limit two of the devices best features. Features which Sony would profit from, the first is games obviously. Although the games published on cartridges are kinda slow the PSN store is packed with games, you have large portions of the PS1, PS2 and the PSPs catalog to choose from and a rapidly growing library of PS Vita indie games. Then you have the AAA games on the PSN store. If people do not have space or are fed up of constant backups they will not be buying games from the PSN store.

The second feature is media, yes phones do it and a whole host of other devices but if it wasn't for the memory issues the PS Vita is still great. Personally I often choose to use the Vita for movies rather than my Galaxy S3, that way I do not kill my phone battery and the Vita is more comfortable to hold because of its chunkiness. Unless you have a £350-500+ smartphone you cannot get a 5" OLED screen thats as good looking as the Vitas, not everyone has one or are inclined to get one. The Vita is a cheaper option for on the go TV and movies, which you can buy from the PSN store for reasonable prices and even for free sometimes. Again the memory problems limit the potential and hit Sony's bottom line and piss the consumer off.

I still like mine even though I am with the OP, the backing up and reinstalling because of memory cards space is annoying. I would recommend that anyone with a PS3 and Vita should get PS+, you get some much for a single one off fee. You can almost make that sub cost back in PSN discounts if you buy a lot of games, then you have all the free games in the instant games collection as well. Not sure if you get enough value with just a Vita, you might do if you try a almost all of the free games on offer. Two or three of the AAA titles is more than the sub cost. PS+ really changes the experience.

Sometimes, one game is enough to make or break the decision in buying a system in the first place. P4 Golden was enough to make a friend of mine love his Vita as Fire Emblem was enough for my 3DS.

Pros
-It plays Persona 4

Cons
-The softest of bumps cause the memory to remove, stopping whatever you were doing and possibly corrupting your saves
-No games
-That's it

You might want to make sure you've clicked the memory cart in properly. That shouldn't happen. If your card is in correctly, you may have a faulty Vita.
