One of my characters has purple hair, mutton chops and a really big gun that fires big bullets that explode and make people fly.

I try to be an awesome badass, but every time I roll-play, I end up being a good character who eats bran cereal and helps old ladies across the street.

When I play? Well, first character was a sneaky stealthy good guy, second character was a sneaky stealthy bad guy, third character was a gun maniac with mastery of all gun skills repair and was a good guy this file was basically my completion file so I broke Fallout 3 with this one, right now I?m making a neutral assassin/mercenary for hire.

I always play stealthy, but everything else varies.
My character always ends up stealthy, deadly in VATS (from the Sniper and Commando perks) and full of built-in damage resistance (Toughness, Cyborg, Barkskin, Survival Guru, and Pitt Fighter combine for 34%) such that even if I went unarmored I'd still have good survivability (protip: Use Buffout if you have to in order to get the endurance answers on the Wasteland Survival Guide. It's worth an extra 6% DR at the end of the quest.)

My most recent character build's SPECIAL stats (in order): 1-9-4-3-9-9-5. Taking Intense Training at level 3 and putting it into Endurance makes the Toughness perk possible at level 6. Getting the 8-Ball as part of "Big Trouble in Big Town" makes Better Criticals possible at level 16.

It would have been nice if they had more reaction to the armor you were wearing, period.

I mean, it just seems a little unlikely that a slaver would wilingly attempt to talk shit to a guy wearing Outcast Power armor.
There are mods that make the different factions react to you depending on what you're wearing. For example if you wear raider armour then raiders will see you as friendly but the BoS factions will be hostile. Wearing BoS power armour will make the Outcasts hostile to you etc.

But yeh, you'd think walking upto Paradise Falls wearing Power Armour and wielding the A3-21 Plasma Rifle would make the locals run away instead of trying to charge an entry fee.

Back on topic: I can never bring myself to be evil in RPG games like Fallout 3, so I finished the game as a level 30 Messiah, all skills to 100 except melee, explosives and sneak.

Sneak seemed a bit pointless while running about in power armour with a gun that fires bright green plasma with Fawkes in tow.

Including the Deathclaw Gauntlet? And if so, I salute your skill at not getting killed with a build like that at higher levels!

For some reason I find it hard to be too evil. I just can't say no to helping people..
Combat wise, I mix it up a bit. I kind of like having a high melee, with explosives and lockpick best.
I guess the fun of Fallout is starting over as someone new, just to see how it changes the game.

I always play good, highly skilled in small guns. And something I did for both Fallout and Oblivion, was to give my character(s) a crazy neon hair colour, and somehow I also always end up ditching armor and going for fancy clothes instead.. No idea why, I only play in 1st person, but I still like to think that "I" can look pretty. :S

I generally go for playing a good guy, but that's simply out of wanting to get the best stuff out of the game. It's easy to gain karma but other than murdering everyone, it's hard to lose.

My character is a Tesla-armoured death on legs. That ignoring the trigger-happy giant and wonky eyed dog as my companions.

I managed to max out Small Guns, Big Guns, Energy Weapons, Melee Weapons and Repair so far.

Usually go for good karma, tag skills are small guns, lockpick and repair or science. In Fallout 3, I usually switch one of the non-combat skills to sneak. After that, it's a toss-up between medicine, lockpick and science.

Except with my current F3 character. Having installed the "realistic" F3 Wanderers Edition mod, I instead have small guns, sneak and repair. Sneak so I have a chance of avoiding combat (understandable, now that a couple of assault rifle rounds can take me out), and repair so I can save caps by fixing my weapons myself. I also like to make an effort to increase medicine and explosives to about the same level as my tag skills. Medicine to get extra healing from stimpacks, and explosives to (a) improve my chances of hitting my mark in V.A.T.S., and (b) to blow open any locks I can't open.

As for the karma, I find myself doing anything I can to survive. So, it's neutral.

I'm only just starting out on Fallout 3. I made a stealthy/melee character named Vince who wears a goatee, a Sheriff's duster and the sneaking hat. He looks like a post apocalyptic Phillip Marlowe. It's boss. He also has a high endurance and the toughness perk, so he can soak up a lot of bullets. Especially fun for those enemies I can't sneak up on.
