Terraria, no question. It's minecraft but with fun combat, interesting enemies, awesome weapons, and an actual progression system. Everything except the building sucks ass in minecraft.
Then notNotch decided to stop production and I died inside.
Oh well. At least we still have Excalibur.

I've grown really fond of Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, even if I do hate going online with it.
Also bought Metal Slug 2 on PSN not too long ago, absolutely loving it despite the fact it kicks my ass every single time.

Pretty much this. I don't understand how my brother is still playing Minecraft and why he has to be so fucking vocal about it. The combat isn't tense at all and there isn't even any skill involved so you don't need to scream,"DIE!!!' /rant

If Fallout 2 counts as 2d, then definitely Fallout 2. It was my first CRPG, and nothing has ever managed to dethrone it from the #1 spot on my list of all time favorite games. Even after 14 years, it's still a blast.

I was going to put the Longest Journey as my runner-up, but I think it used a mix of 2D and 3D.

Errr...Ummmm...Ahhh...I don't think I like any 2D games? No wait. Machinarium and Botanicula do they count? Oh and Tetris... Screw it I'm going to call Sid Meier's Pirates! 2D. So Pirates! it is.

Most games I like have some sort of isometric perspective at least, even if they are technically 2D. Hell even Battle Chess is isometric.

Super Mario World. The most complete 2D game, IMO of course. A combo of gameplay, music, and style that can be met by no challenger.

Cave story, Super Metroid and um...
I don't know if Klonoa fits this catorgory due to using 3D models for background but still basicly being a 2D platformer.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Not only was it my first game, it's one my all-time favorites.
Motherfucking Ninjas up in here.

It's my favorite SNES game and in my top 3 favorite Nintendo games of all time. It's just so goddamn good. Truth be told, I don't think that I ever owned it for the SNES, I think I just constantly played it at friends' houses all these years until the GBA re-release.

I'm not even gonna spoilerize this pic. No need to hide the awesome.

I love turn based strategy games. HOMM, Disciples, etc. But my favorite classic 2d sidescroller is probably Megaman X (or possibly Megaman 7... stfu it's actually really good). Megaman X just took platforming to a whole new level with the wall grabs and crazy air dashing and everything.
Mega Man 7 *is* a good game, although I'm pretty much saying that mainly just because of the BADASS final boss fight. Mega Man X is awesome because of all of the sweet moves you can pull off. Wall dash-jumping at a near-dead boss and unleashing a charge shot right in his face to finish him off is very satisfying indeed. Mega Man Zero (the series, not the first game) takes that awesomeness and ramps it up to the max. Awesome level design, awesome bosses, awesome moves/weapons, awesome challenge, awesome everything.

Contra 3 and 4 are pretty badass as well.

Mega Man X-3 and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Those two bring forth the fondest memories for me whenever someone says "2-D".

The Megaman X series of games up until 6 are great, Super Metroid, Fallout 2, Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past, I could go on and on but I'll stop there.

MELTY BLOOD Actress Again Current Code is a favourite. It's a 2D fighting game featuring the characters of Tsukihime, and Kagetsu Tohya, two visual novels developed by Type-Moon. I love it because it feels so free-form compared to other 2D fighters.
