KOTOR was, and still is one of my favorite games. Same with KOTOR 2, but it's not quite early 00's. Morrowind is up there as well.

I can't think of any that I played that have provided more than nostalgia. Every single one of them when I went back to play them I felt very, very, frustrated.

I can see where your coming from the older rpgs do tend to have a rather step difficulty and learning curves

Xenogears is a brilliant game, it's to bad they defiled it with Xenosaga (I know it's not truly related but come on, if you played them both tell me they don't share a lot of similarities).

Planescape Torment is a gem if there ever was one.

And the first two Elder Scrolls games are surprisingly brilliant, even after all these years.
Ding Ding Ding Ding! We havea winner.

I played the crap out of Elder Scrolls Daggerfall in college, and Planescape is one of my favorite D&D worlds along with Dark Sun.

It's not even that though, because I was quite experienced with them, so it's like going back to riding a bike, but this bike has octagonal wheels and a wooden pole with splinters instead of a seat.

Exile just didn't have a story anymore, it was an interesting sandbox, but there was nothing new to discover. Baldur's Gate really fell appart if you didn't follow the plot. I got killed so many times going to places on the map that they expected you to go to later, so they had encounters for a higher level party. It felt like being railroaded by a dick GM, and that's interestingly what tabletop RPGs were like then too, and the horrible advice in the 2e DMG. I dislike playing BG for the same reason I don't like playing AD&D anymore, and when I do play AD&D it's heavily tweaked so that it looks like a different game.

Torment and System Shock 1 and 2. I played most of them but these are two (three?) that stand-out for me. Mind you, VtM:Bloodlines came out in 2004 so probably just misses out of being included.
