Risk. Me, my bother, dad and sister battle it out every now and then. Last time, me and my dad had both been eliminated and everyone else were in pretty strong positions and they're still arguing over who had the upper hand. They can't even remember who had which continents, just the memory that they thought they were right.

Civilisation (Avalon Hill, 1982) and Chainsaw Warrior (Games Workshop, 1987)

It may not be a coincidence that two of my favourite pc games are Civilisation II (no relation) and Doom.

My favourite game is definitely without a shadow of a doubt, Monopoly...nobody really wants to play for hours on end though :(.

Diplomacy.

Think of it as a pure strategy no luck version of Risk. The first time I played it was in a Political Science class called Strategic Studies.

The entire class was split into "countries" and we battled it out on a pre-WWI landscape. There was intrigue, backstabbing, and hurt feelings.

It was Magical.

In the midst of all the platform, PC and hand held gaming technology I wonder how often people still play board games.

My favorites include:

Betrayal at House on the Hill http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/prod/betrayalhouse

The Settlers of Catan http://www.catan.com/

Both incredible games that change the field each time its played so the strategy and outcome is never known until it's all over. If you have never played these I recommend looking them up and finding out where you can. Post your own favorite games here, preferably with info links, so you can hook others.
i was about to say settlers of catan because i figured no one else would have heard of it. my friend made me play it last week and im so glad he did. the idea sounds so boring and i figured id play it once just to make me friend happy but i got really into it really fast

My favorite board game would most likely have to be chess. I do enjoy Monopoly and Risk as well but Chess is my all time favorite. Sadly, I hardly know anyone that plays it.

for long term games stretched out over a several multi-hour sessions: Twilight Imperium.

for 2-player think fests: Twilight Struggle

for casual group play: Puerto Rico and Dominion

for awesome theme-based gaming: BSG and Mansions of Madness

a bit surprised that so many ppl are still into catan, I've completely fallen out of love with it...way too dependant on luck.

It's also the 'best' game to guarantee one person will not have any fun whatsoever....seen so many games with one of 4 players immediately cock blocked in the initial set-up, zero chance of winning or even making any kind of headway.

Definitely Risk, it's easy to learn and getting people to play.
Man, have I had some fun nights playing Risk: we came up with some house rules to add a diplomatic element to the game and that just made it so much more immersive.

Definitely Cosmic Encounter. I have the new Fantasy Flight Games version and it's fantastic. It has pretty simple core rules but what makes it interesting is that each player has a unique alien power that breaks the rules. Kind of like in Magic how the cards break the rules (although Magic's core rules aren't anywhere near "simple"). And with both expansions, there's 90 different alien powers, so the number of combinations is pretty huge.

It also requires players to negotiate and backstab each other constantly, which is always fun.

The only problem with the game is that it can be pretty random (although not as random as Monopoly or Risk for example), so if you like having control over everything, it might not be the game for you. For everyone else, especially if you like high player interaction, I can't recommend it enough.

Seconded. You really need to have a whole day set aside for a single game session, but the game is so much fun that time just flies by.

Other than that, I'm quite partial to Vampire: Prince of the City. Wonderfully backstabby little game. ^^

for me, warhammer ranks pretty high (though not 40k as i love the pure fantasy aspect of warhammer (though i do think that magic needs to be toned down), but hate the sci-fi/fantasy aspect of 40k), but i think my favorite board game would have to be the japanese chess equivalent with a few added rules: shogi. just a shame that i can never find a set or anyone to play with

Trivial Pursuit by far. Because I am nothing if not a master at amassing otherwise pointless knowledge.

Too bad no-one I know cares about playing anything at all. Unless it's Monopoly, which I both despise and am absolutely terrible at.

Well, actually... I suppose there is that one other game they are willing to play...

And it's so much fun. No, seriously, I love it.

Stop judging me!

Risk is always a good choice.

What's that? Asia's impossible to hold? Oh? Australia's even harder? Not if I have anything to say about it.
