For Esmé - with Love and Squalor (and other stories) demonstrates what a mistake it is to judge Salinger entirely from Catcher in the Rye. The breadth of that man's writing is incredible.

V (Pynchon) - in fact, anything by Pynchon; frustratingly engrossing.

Gormenghast (trilogy) (Peake) - mindblowing. High fantasy, no magic, no monsters. Simply mindblowing; a real Gothicgasm.
