Your Favorite Character

In my most humble opinion, the best video game character of all time is Solid Snake.

Silent Hill 2 James sunderland,
because its refreshing to play as a slighly pathetic, heart broken, self pitying, deluded loser bordering on manic depression....
Oh and despite all this he is still some how lovable, he is probabaly the most 'human' protagonist ive ever played as in a game.

Too many games characters are bad-ass cold blooded killers with no personality to the point where it becomes hard to distinguish one from another. Its almost like there is a 'template' that gets used over and over.
I know there is a rule that designers go by - that a player character should be given a weak, low profile personality in case they end up alienating those players who can't relate to them.
But just having a bland / generic character can be alienating too.

Its better to hate your character than to just not care about them. (At least they are memorable that way)

Niko Bellic, he was smart, capable and above all, cynical. I really like Gaz from CoD 4, and Dunn from MW2, although he can be a whiner at times. Alcatraz had his share of charm by being held together by the plotdevice known as the Nanosuit, which made him feel a lot more vulnerable and thus human.

My latest favourite is Adam Jensen from DX: HR. If you can look past the gravely voice then you'll realise that he's quite badass.

Likes: Long black coats, whiskey, instant sunglasses

Dislikes: Proper boss fights/girlfriends

I'll second The Darkness' Jackie Estacado. The game was already more amazingly well written and fun than I expected for the $5 bargin I nabbed it for, but Jackie ended up being only character, let alone in an FPS, that I was every genuinely emotionally invested in; his plight and his vengence were my own... Saddest. Ending. EVER.

You. YOU are my new best friend. I share the EXACT same outlook as you do.

Well, I'm honored; I now need TWO fingers to count my Escapist friends! Hoping this means you're chomping at bit for The Darkness 2 just as I am?? The Darkness really was prime for a sequel, a perfect storm: great story, awesome characters and the 1st one was a sleeper hit, so any sequel should be a service to the franchise's great points and not a mere rushed servicing of rabid fanboy demand for more of the same. I think I'm looking forward to this game more than any other for the foreseeable future.

I have to say Cortana, from Halo.
She's fantastic, purple, witty and sarcastic just like me. She's got a brilliant personality, and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty... and hack stuff for me. What did you /think/ I meant?
Or, for the sake of multi-choice, my second option would be... Joker. From Mass Effect. Nearly the same reasons as Cortana, really...
