Mostly this thread is just an excuse for me to post this:

I adore Sinead O'Connor, and this video demonstrates why.

A lot of female vocal artists are pigeonholed into being either sultry seductresses or overly feminine criers. Not Sinead. Listen to the raw vitriol in her voice as she intones "THERE IS NO OTHER TROY FOR ME TO BURN". One of the greatest pop voices of the late 20th century, and by my warrant the most underrated.

My favourite female artist would be Asami Imai in her role as Kisaragi Chihaya:

And a close second would be Senya.

Besides the fact I fall in love with pretty much every female Japanese vocalist I hear, I'll just give the one I listen to on a daily basis.

Since Japan is annoying, here is the link to soundcloud. [https://soundcloud.com/mixordia/unknown-vision-akino-arai]

Other than that, Eyes Set to Kill's vocalist is quite impressive.

Then there is the lead vocalist for The Agonist.

iwrestledabearonce isn't that bad either.

I'm a huge Ringo Shiina fan.

Unfortunately not a lot of her songs are on youtube anymore (or at least not available in my country,) but there's quite a few live videos.

(Footage is live. Audio is official.)

(1:04 makes me swoon every time.)

Ditto'd - love that song, and that album.

One of my favourite would be Joanna Newsom - folksy, harpist with a gorgeous voice, and, I reckon, some ridiculously beautiful and intimate songwriting:

She's a bit of a female Nick Drake at times (biased towards melody, great songwriter, and a bit of a genius on their chosen instruments), 'cept without the various depressive themes.

Anything by LiSA I will love. All of her songs are so fun to listen to, i'm glad she's got some good anime openings in and hopefully gets more in future.

On the same note, GARNiDELiA deserves a mention just for making the second Kill la Kill opening so damn awesome. If Attack on Titan's Guren no Yumiya already hadn't taken the all time number 1 spot for anime openings until the end of time by unanimous vote across the anime community, I would save the top spot for Ambiguous.

Masha Arkhipova from Arkona. Fantastic clean vocals, especially when she does the folky styles. Her harsh vocals aren't that bad either.

Andrea Meyer from Hagalaz' Runedance. A more focused style of folk vocals like what is heard on Arkona, but it sounds a tad more authentic. Probably my favourite female vocals of all time right here.

Dana Duffey from Mythic/Demonic Christ. Easily my favourite female harsh vocalist.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton paved the way for the rock-n-roll of the 50s.

(Elvis would later cover this, [in my opinion] to the song's detriment.)

Damn, you beat me to it :) Would have been my suggestion as well. It's quite amazing how she changes from growling to clean voice without problems during live shows.

Since Arkona was already mentioned I'd like to mention Arch Enemy.

Jenna McDougall from Tonight Alive. She's like the better version of Hayley Williams.

I don't have many female singers in my iTunes right now, which is a shame. I tend to take off artists that I've overplayed so I don't get sick of their songs.

One of my picks would be the singer from Within Temptation.

Also Evanescence, which I guess is sort of a similar style, so I won't bother linking a video for that.

I am going to be greedy and pick several. But I will say that my favourite performance by a female singer was when I saw the fantastic Gilly Darbey when she was touring as part of "Nothing by chance".

However I could not leave without mentioning Eddi Reader

Bonnie Raitt

Amy Wadge

and KT Tunstall

I also admire, but I have yet to see live Florence (and the Machine) and Kate Bush
