I saw the thread and started thinking about the topic. Then as soon as I entered it the OP answered the question for me, I throw my vote in with Sinéad O'Connor as well (and Troy is an amazing song, gives me chills every time I listen to it) ^^

Patti Smith comes in as a close second though. By far one of my favorite song writers ever, and pretty high on my list of favorite vocalist as well.

There's not enough female singers that are as raw and soulful as Janis was. Man, her voice has serious balls.

If I'm honest, I love everything about this band. Eva Spence's vocals are incredible- her harsh vocals are right up there with the best of them and it's interspersed with angelic clean singing. Pretty spellbinding frontwoman too.

Awesome blues singing and awesome blues guitar playing. Too much blues. Pretty much ditto everything I said about Janis Joplin (replace 'was' with 'is').

I have quite a few but my favourite are...

1: Floor Jansen- After Forever, ReVamp and now Nightwish

2: Simone Simmons- Epica

3: Sharon Den Adele- Within Temptation

4: Charlotte Wessels- Delain

5: Alissa White-Gluz- The Agonist, Arch Enemy

6: Noora Louhimo- Battle Beast

I would list more, Though I understand people are into different types of music, They are all in metal groups and they may not be to everyone's liking. Also quick question. Do I just put the link in so the videos will show up?, still new to the whole posting on forums thing.

Oh boy.

Agata Jarosz - A new discovery for me but one that stuck around. That range. That power.

Agnete Kjølsrud - Found this band through that Jinxx video, and fell in love with Djerv as whole. But she was at her best (IMO) in her old band.

Chibi - I adore this band, and this woman's voice. 80's synth-pop throwback mixed with gothic sensibilities and frankly some of the best video clips I've seen a while. Like this one.

Candace Kucsulain - I love a screamer (in more ways than one) and this woman...oh god. Have my babies!

Natasha Cox - MKIO might be one of the most underappreciated bands. I can't tell you how much I love Tash's range. This isn't one of their greatest songs, but it's the one that got me hooked.

Brittany Bindrim - Wow. Wowowowowowow.

And while I have many others, I'll leave it there.

Enjoy.

Another one for my list: Floor Jansen. Originally in After Forever, she's the new permanent vocalist for Nightwish.

Sharon Van Etten - Magic Chords
Cat Power - Human Being
Mazzy Star - Into Dust

And pick pretty much any song from either Portishead or the Cranberries.

Pretty sure I'm just scratching the surface here, though. There's thousands of really great female vocalists out there.

So many choices, too little time. Geike Arnaert, Grace Slick, Shirley Manson and Eithne Ní Bhraonáin.

Regina Spektor, The Shaggs, (totally unironically) Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone (child shooting aside), and the unique [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrATgc6npEE] Eartha Kitt, just to name a few.

I really enjoy Morgan Kibby, singing with M83.

And I'm also very impressed with Florence from Florence and the Machine. My personal favorite of hers is

I can't really list any specific female singers that are a huge influence on me. Most of the vocalists I like are male, but there are definitely some female ones out there that I appreciate their style. These 2 women are the ones that seem to have the most emotional punch for me personally.

35 posts before someone mentions Florence Welch? For shame Escapists.

That's my favourite song of hers. Just so much power in that voice.

There's also the Ms in Ms Mr.

And finally, Lauren King's vocals are an excellent complement to H320's dark tones.
