One of the best parts of any Final Fantasy game has to be the summon mechanic. Nothing quite beats the thrill of calling up a legendary creature to smite your enemies in any number of awesome ways. Another awesome thing is the wide variety of summons to choose from, which brings me to my question to all of you: What is/are your favorite Final Fantasy Summon/s? And to make it a bit more interesting, WHICH version of that particular summon is your favorite. (If said summon appeared in more than one game.)

For example: Two of my favorite Summons are Bahamut and Odin. My favorite versions of these two come from Final Fantasies IX and VIII respectively.

Why those particular versions specifically?

Well, for Bahamut, it's a matter of finally seeing him for the first time in the game.

Here's the video:

While it's not exactly my favorite design of Bahamut ever. (Where are his eyes?) There is no denying his power in that cutscene. To me, this IS Bahamut the Dragon King in all his glory, tearing through his enemies like wet tissue paper. The cutscene displays his power in a way that simply summoning him in-game can't, and that makes this my favorite Bahamut.

It's actually kind of the opposite with Odin from VIII though. For him it's all about his design.

Let me show you:

In Final Fantasy VIII Odin actually LOOKS like the badass dark knight that he's supposed to be. Nothing against the Odins of the other games but I always felt that, of the FFs I've played, his face always looked a bit...dopey. Don't get me wrong, he was still powerful but I was never really intimidated by him. But then we have FF VIII's Odin...holy shit talk about an upgrade. All they really did was change up his head a little, make it a bit more human-like, turn his antlers into a horned helmet, and viola! Now he looks like a swordsman who can and does kill his enemies with a single swing of his mighty blade.

My favourite summon overall would be this beast

Awesome looking, powerful as hell and she has the coolest Overdrive of all.

I also really liked Bahamut from FFX as well, such a fucking cool design

I really do love most of Shiva's forms.

FF8 and FF10 were both pretty good looking.

I've always liked Phoenix. Particularly the FFVIII version--the game itself was rather crap, but its Phoenix was pretty awesome-looking. And, hey, it revived your dead characters while you were at it.

I like the ones that take the least amount of time to summon after I have seen their animation once. Think I liked Odin from FF7 the best at least thats the one that stands out in my memory.

I played a load of final fantasy 4 and I think my most used summon was Ifirit. His earthquake attack was well useful.

Alexander, no doubt.

There's just something about the giant, sentient castle-thing that fires holy lasers that I like. Hell, the very fact that Hope gets Alexander as his Eidolon helped me put up with the whiny brat.

Certainty, there should be a Final Fantasy mecha spin-off.

While not players summons, the Eikons of 14 feels like a perfect realization of their PS1 era designs.

And since it's a sequel ish thing to Four Warriors of Light I'm gonna call Bravely Defaults' summons among the best just because of how bizarre they are (except Zusudra, you god damned letdown)

Look at them! One is an airliner with flapping bird wings, the other is an electrical tower and the last one is a train that breathes fire.

My vote goes to Anima as well. The whole thing is just so disturbing. The giant hook plunging into the ground to drag her out and the fact that she's all chained up. She's both terrifying and tragic. And that overdrive is pretty damn freaky.

my vote goes for Bahamut Neo from FF VII. I just love how cool the red makes it look, how he takes you up to the sky and then not only does he mega flare your face but drops you back to Earth it's all so cool looking

a close second would be FF X Anima

[HEADING=2]Doomtrain[/HEADING]
Do I really need to say anything else? Because I feel like I should just be able to say the word "Doomtrain" and everyone should just be like "yeah".

Seriously. Just LOOK at this mother fucker!

Do you SEE how FUCKING METAL this guy is?
Look at his summon!
He is a metal ass train flying through space!
Look at his big dumb skull face!
Seriously, as far as I'm concerned, Final Fantasy summons end with Doomtrain.

I really loved the aesthetics of FFX, and as people here have said both their version of Bahamut, and Anima looks awesome.

However, Valefor has always occupied that special place in my heart. I love his visuals, I love how he plays, like Bahamut only weaker and more elusive(if that makes any sense). Also, that feeling when you discover his second Overdrive was Amazing when I first played the game.

Runner up spot for me is Fenrir in his various incarnations.

Yes.

All of them. I always love Final Fantasy Summons. Be it Shiva and her icy blasts. Ifrit as he rains down Hellfire. Doomtrain's just plain insanity. The mighty Bahamut. The more comical Summons like Tonberry and Cactuar. Or the more or less one off summons like Siren, Quetzalcoaatl, or Valefor. I do enjoy the various summons.

Sorry, I can't choose.

I gotta agree, FFXIV has lots of great renditions of the gems of the Final Fantasy series. From Ifrit, Garuda, Odin and Titan to Good King Moggle Mog XII and the Tonberry King. It's got the seriousness we like to see in a Final Fantasy, but also the silliness and absurdity. And nothing says silly and absurd like the Good King Moggle Mog fight, lol.

And I think we can call them summons, technically speaking. The ones who are faithful to the primals technically "summon" them using lots of crystals and lots of faith.

For me it's Ifrit in Final Fantasy X. There is something about flaming werewolf with horns that makes me feel the overflowing badassness.

I want to say Tonberry King from FFVIII, but I think I have to go with Carbuncle from the same game, due to it being 'involuntary squee'ing for 3 hours' adorable. <3

Of all the incarnations of Bahumut, I've always liked the FFX version the most.

He's so over the top in that armor design that it's hard to even get a clear picture of him.
So many things about FFX were just cool for the sake of being cool and completely, shamelessly disregard functionality.

In general: Always liked me some giant lightning bird in FF8, it was the first summon where it's attack made me think it was badass.

Story wise: Alexander in final fantasy nine was such an amazing moment, I really need to play through that again. I wish the newer final fantasies would take the route of the summons as superweapons with the capacity for huge destruction, it was so damned cool.
