Not into horror games in general, but the ones I can stomach the most are where you can actually fight back like Dead Space 1 and 2.

Condemned Criminal Origins is one of the best as far as I'm concerned. It's shame the second one went off the rails so hard.

Resident Evil REmake

Dead Space

Doom 3

Diablo I

Those are some ones that come to mind. Judging it on the merits of the horror, it would either be Dead Space or Resident Evil.

On the off chance you're not a bot named Zanzabara who's joined at least 3 other gaming forums today alone:
http://oppressive.games/forums/index.php?members/zanzabara.372/

http://www.wsgf.org/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=72865

and posted the same post here:

I'm going to answer with Amnesia a Machine for Pigs, Silent Hill 3, and maybe Little Nightmares if it counts.
Fucking bot.

I thought this was going to be a 'take your favourite game and reimagine it as a horror' kinda game.

Left 4 Dead is as close as I care to get to horror. No closer.

Silent Hill 2 (although I don't know if I could play it again), with Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth coming in second.

I could not bring myself to continue playing Amnesia.

SH2 isn't nearly as scary as anyone makes it seem. It was very, totally legit like super scary in in 2001, when 13 Ghosts, Ghosts of Mars, Jason X, and Jeepers Creepers(a literal scooby doo reference) were considered horror movies.
Silent Hill 2 is the Army of Darkness of Silent Hill games. So campy and absurd we laugh.

The condemned games were freaking brilliant. I loved how they mixed in the forensic elements, just made the game that much more engaging and thrilling, especially when the scares were mixed in. The combat was so well done, felt like you were actually fighting for your life with psychos who just wanted to dismember you, and probably do even nastier things afterwards.

My vote also goes to games in which you can fight back, so:
RE series
Dying Light
Dead Island
Dead Space 1 and 2
F.E.A.R 1 and 2

I don't believe there is a Dead Island 2 out yet.

Best horror games around:

Silent Hill 1 - 3
Resident Evil 1 - 3
Dead Space 1 & 2
F.E.A.R. (the first one mostly)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Alien: Isolation

Agreed, but I rather liked Condemned 2 as well. The ending was pretty BS (I?ll give you that,) but the quality of the game all around up to that point was pretty stellar.

Wasn?t Dead Island: Riptide pretty much a sequel to Dead Island? I played the hell out of both; got the full 1,000 Gamerscore in both as well.

Yeah, im not too into horror.

The Dead Space series is about as scary as I get. At least I can shoot the evil murdering thing that is trying to chase me down.

Well I'm not much for jump-scares and I consider SH2 to be the most....... atmospheric of the series. Also, I was a teenager when I last played it on the PS2.

Resident Evil 2. I loved how you had to think on if you should take a weapon to make it easier for one character but harder for the other.

Jeepers Creepers is a slang term from 1925 an alternation of Jesus, used as an expression of surprise.

Anyway, some great Horror games I have played are

Among The Sleep

Little Nightmares
The ending... Wow

Outlast

Perception

Alien: Isolation

SOMA

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
That's the viral trailer

F.E.A.R. and Dying Light are also amazing ones also mentioned above. Dyning Light in particular has that 80s post apocalyptic horror vibe, thinks its the Synth Wave soundtrack.

What I meant was the movie was a more 'serious' telling of that Jeepers Creepers scooby doo episode, just with the monster being real instead of old man Withers, the amusement park owner.
