Your favorite game in the style of horror

Well, since the question is "In the style of horror":

Thief, especially Dark Project and the infamous Shalebrigdge Cradle level in Deadly Shadows.
Spec Ops: The Line, which takes horror in a bit different direction than scary monsters or super creeps.
STALKER series where Zone becomes much more friendly at day, once you have to face the night.

Here, one of my favorite examples of games that don't technically fall into horror category, but have some really great horror elements.

Bonus mention: Ravenholm from HL2 and dream sequences from Max Payne(how could the team that came up with this make one of the least scary horrors i played, later?).

SH2 isn't nearly as scary as anyone makes it seem. It was very, totally legit like super scary in in 2001, when 13 Ghosts, Ghosts of Mars, Jason X, and Jeepers Creepers(a literal scooby doo reference) were considered horror movies.
Silent Hill 2 is the Army of Darkness of Silent Hill games. So campy and absurd we laugh.
Okay, i know you are reaaally peeved about SH2 being considered the best in the series, but that's just liessilly.

Oooh, excellent choice. I'd say it's one of the best psychological horror games ever made, because it's so freaking SUBVERSIVE and UNREAL and EMOTIONALLY SHATTERING - really good traits of effective psychological horror. And it's made even better by the fact that you get no warning ahead of time that it's going to be a horror game.

I'd count (almost) the entire Silent Hill series as a standout horror favorite of mine.

I did thoroughly enjoy the Dead Space games, but I'm not really sure I'd classify them as horror - they're more like action games with really f***ed-up looking enemies and the occasional jump scare.

I've also had some very effective horror experiences in VR, but I'm not sure how much of it is "this is really well-done horror" and how much is "this is automatically better at jump-scaring me because of the enhanced immersion of first-person."

Silent 2. The first game to really get me into psychological horror after I had written the genre off. Strong atmosphere, sound design, story, etc.

Shattered Memories. Not half as scarier as earlier Silent Hills, but strong in story, pacing, and psychological elements.

SOMA. Not quite as scary as Amnesia, but I admire the drive to make the existential horror a more personal and emotional experience then simply running away from the monsters.

Limbo. Not horror per se, but I really love the stark art style oppressive atmosphere of the world that you barely know anything about.

Fran Bow. Didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but it's a very surreal and multilayered for a point-and-click game that starts out in a standard hospital horror setting before descending into a more fantastical and imaginative world.

Eternal Darkness. It's aged in a lot of ways, but I really like the sanity themes and shifting character perspectives it plays around with. It's one of the few games I can think of that really has fun with Lovecraftian themes in a more character driven way.
