Alas, poor Sonic...

After the abomination that was Sonic '06, nobody seems to be even giving him a fair chance anymore. The fanbase is FUBAR, full of stubborn people who will either defend or condemm any given title to their last breath, including going so far as to defend Sonic '06. But as I was saying, after that game, there seems to be a very large chunk of the gaming community who have decided that the franchise is dead and all subsequent Sonic games are futile attempts at revival, no matter how good the game may actually be. Combined with actual Sonic fans who may be pissed at any small part of the game, that's quite a vocal tidal wave that automatically crashes down on any current-gen title. Generations looks quite promising, actually, but I fear that promise may get drowned in the tidal wave spawned by that one sequel from five years ago.

Halo 1+2 will always have a special place in my heart, but the series was killed by Halo 3. it was resurrected by Halo reach though. great game.

God of War, pretty much, The second had WAAAY too many puzzles for my liking, but I felt the third one was an improvement over the second one. Still not as good as the first.

And before I forget, Starfox...

Call of Duty.

Only time will tell if it pulls itself together again, or ends it's free-fall nose-dive crashing on a concrete floor

I wouldn't say it destroyed the series but Mafia II was certainly a weak successor, particularly considering how awesome it was 6 months before release when they arbitrarily decided to postpone the game and cut massive chunks out.
So I'll resign myself to voting for the Call of Duty series post-Modern Warfare.

A lot of great PS1 series' like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider.
God Of War 3 was fucking dreadful. I'm still royally pissed about that one.
Fable. Fable 1 was one of my favourite Xbox games, then 2 was awful and, for some reason, I still went out and bought 3! I'm an idiot...

Honestly I've never understood how a game could become any less good simply because there was another game with a similar theme that wasn't as good... If a games good its good and a game being killed simply because of its sequel is the same as a sequel being good simply because its predecessor was good IMO, it doesn't work that way! although Fianl fantasy XIII dampened my view of the final fantasy series and square enix as a whole if that's what you mean

COD4. MW2 has sort of ruined 4 for me. It wasn't a terrible game, but it wasn't very good, whatever argument you make. Neither was Black Ops either really, but it tried some new things which deserves some credit. And World at War... well it wasn't great, but I will admit I became horribly addicted to it's multiplayer (nothing quite like throwing a sticky grenade on someone's face, then watching as he sprints right into a group of his friends), but in retrospect it was really just a rehash of had come before.

Jak and Daxter.

Yes, I said it. I loved the first game, with its lush, green forests and its old-school platforming gameplay done so incredibly well. Not to mention the game world itself:

No levels. No loading times. Just ONE SINGLE LANDSCAPE, constructed in one single piece.

Yeah. Seriously. No levels. You didn't get to the final boss by making it through a series of variously-themed obstacle courses. You got to the final boss by TRAVERSING THE ENTIRE CONTINENT, from one end to the other! The whole game is a single, seamless journey - through forests, jungles and gloomy caves, up snowy mountains and across fields of boiling lava! That provides a uniquely epic feel that no other game can match.

And then, the sequel came. As most of you know, Jak and Daxter 2 is set in a grimy, futuristic city with heavy traffic, dense crowds, police everywhere - and guns. Yes, guns. After the primitive, down-to-Earth feel of the previous game, we suddenly get guns. J&D2 is basically a slightly more cartoony version of GTA. Jak was still very much a platform hero, Daxter was still funny, but I just couldn't get into the game. The gritty, urban feel was simply not what I wanted from a J&D game.

I missed the jungle.

AND there were loading screens.

I never bothered to finish the second game. And since the third game was a direct continuation of the story, I just gave up on the series right there.

Bioshock. Seriously, after the abomination that was Bioshock 2, i can't even look at the first one without sighing.
The gameplay was improved but the plot was truly awful. I felt they should have focused on more supernatural elements like the ghosts and the little sister fantasies instead of just bland level after bland level bar the Ryan Theme Park.

Fable 1 and TLC seemed really good and after that Fable 2 and 3 ruined it. The worst part was Fable 3 was decent until the ending

Silent Hill.

I'm going to disagree with Yahtzee on this aswell so i'll await being mobbed by his fans afterwards.

I loved the first Silent Hill. It was new in the survival horror genre, it was eerie and it had atmoshpere. It had a decent plot and good characters and decisions you made affected the outcome.

Good gameplay, graphics were okay but it felt right.

I just couldn't get the same feel from any of the others. They just seemed to be trying too hard to spooky and failing in the process.
This... mostly. I'd personally say they started getting awful round about The Room. Origins was playable and Shattered Memories was a surprising game, just not a Silent Hill game. Homecoming on the other hand... I refuse to accept it as a direct sequel or acknowledge its canon in any way.

Also this. I mean nothing can ever compare to the original can it? Halo 2 was and still is totally awful. Halo 3 is still pretty good but there's something missing. I love ODST and Reach like adopted brothers, but Halo: CE will always be my baby. Don't even mention Halo Wars, that's the uncle no one talks about.

Also with crappy sequels:

Bioshock
Condemned
Fable
Star Fox

I also predict the upcoming Max Payne 3 to condemn the original two games as well... sad times.

3 Pages and no Mercenaries... that I could find anyway. I don't find the 2nd as terrible as many do. But it dosen't hold up to the first at all.

I love you for this! GOD I loved Jak and Daxter so much! Then Jak 2 came out and turned it completely upside down! Also Fable (loved the first, second was ok, and i still haven't finished the third.) and Bioshock (1 was my favorite game ever for a bit but 2 was just "meh".)
