I've been waiting for a thread like this for a while. To keep it short, I'll limit myself to my top 5.

#5: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Now, I like the series as a whole, but if I had to narrow it down to one game from the series, I'd have to go with Brotherhood. I know that it isn't as big as the second, but honestly, the reason I like Brotherhood the most is all the characters you can interact with. I know they were their in 2, but I feel like you got to know them better in Brotherhood.

#4: Skyrim. What can I say that everyone else already hasn't? This game consumed my life for a while and I didn't mind that it did. I liked that the story I made for my character felt like my own and I also like how expansive the world was.

#3: Team Fortress 2. I get bored of FPSs easily. At this point, an FPS has to do something special for me to take notice of it. And you know what? This one did. This game takes all that "realistic" bullshit and chunks it out the window and replaces it with hours of fun. With a charming style to memorable characters, its a game that not only made me care about not only FPSs but also online play.

#2: Spec Ops: The Line. Now at the opposite end of the spectrum from TF2, Spec Ops was a game that got my attention from it's supposedly amazing narrative. And even after everyone told me I'd be depressed by the end of it, I never realized how depressed I'd be because holy shit this game. It's a game that makes you think and to me that's always a plus.

And my #1 is: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. I'm sure my icon might have given this one away. Like with Brotherhood, I like the Layton series as a whole, but Unwound Future will forever hold a special place in my heart.

1. Bayonetta. One of only two H&S games I've ever played. And by far my favourite game this gen.
2. Just Cause 2. I don't think that I need to explain why:p Best sandbox game ever made IMO.
3. Dark Souls. I have a love/hate relationship with this game. Love the no hand holding, hate everything else.
4. Alpha Protocol. Only got it recently but I love that your choices are actually choices and actually change stuff.
5. FF 13-2. It just has so much charm...
6. Katawa Shoujo. This "game" is my baby. Everything about it is just so powerful, especially Hanako's route. It got me into VNs. Speaking of which, does anyone know a good "comedy" VN? I getting kinda depressed with the VNs I currently have.
7. TWEWY. Purely for the soundtrack. I play it on an emulator so the audio quality is even shittier than on the DS but good on ya, Square Enix.

I can't think of any more right now but I know that there's some more games that I loved.

In no particulare order:

My favorite game of that year.

I laughed and enjoyed the shoot 'n loot gameplay.

Maybe soon, but I'm loving every minute of this game.

Atmosphere, loved the episodic format, some good scares, awesome lightning effects.

So many quality hours in this game.

Underrated and sadly commercially flopped game, which I found to be a fun take on the kart genre. Unfortunately the swan song for Bizarre creations.

Entertaining gameplay, amazing art style and all topped with that sexy narrating voice!

Did a great job for making you feel empowered and loved the setting, graphically impressive too.

Style, substance, everything

200+ hrs and counting, 'nuff said. Loving the DLC too.

So much style, solid gameplay too. The Bayonetta of 3rd person shooters

Nothing like C4 mayhem!

I have to say Persona 3: Portable and Persona 4: Golden are most notable games of this generation for me. They were total surprise, because I've never played JRPG before and they introduced me to JRPGs. Currently, only one game tops P3 and P4 for me and that is Front Mission 3 back from PS1 era.
Mass Effect is also one of my favorites with its new and awesome sci-fi setting.
Despite how much I can complain about, Dota and Dota2 is also generation defining game for me, spending about 8 years playing that time black hole of a game.
Torchlight series, while not making anything revolutionary, they just perfected old Diablo formula.

In fair warning the gameplay is so average it's average, if you're interested in the idea that killing the local weapons dealer makes enemies in future levels have cruddy weapons, but also removes his weapons from your store. Or that you can choose to piss of a certain bad guy to the extent that he will fight you to the death instead of running away and showing up as a boss later, if that stuff interests you, AP is definitely worth picking up, especially considering the low price.

But don't go in expecting the fun to be in the gameplay (and also make sure you pick pistols as one of your skills since it's got an ability which is basically 'skip boss-fights'), even the story itself isn't particularly great, because most of the people keep their true motivations secret (they are spies after all) and you only find them out with a lot of digging and building up trust (one of the great things about AP is that they expect some people will choose to make people like them, without assuming that it means the PC actually like them. Making someone like you just so you can use them to your benefit is perfectly valid) so it can take a couple of playthroughs to figure it all out.

Could you recommend some VN's for me? We seem to share interests in several games and I've basically just played Katawa Shoujo at the moment and I'm finding it hard to figure out where I should go next

Try Steins;Gate, Fate/Stay Night, Saya No Uta, Clannad, Crescendo, Yume Miru Kusuri and Kana Little Sister. Those are all the VNs I've have so far. They're all pretty much the most emotional things ever:)

Take note, you gotta do some extra stuff to get some of the above VNs to work. Changing system locale, compatability modes, keyboard settings etc. And you have to have the Kana Little Sister disc in the drive because it keeps all the music on there.

The only reason I didn't buy that game was because it got such a reputation for being buggy. Did they eventually iron out the problems with patches?

I've personally found this to be the least buggy of Obsidian games, not counting Dungeon Siege 3 because I haven't played it yet.

It's not perfect in that matter, of course. On PC, there are occasional environmental texture pop-ins, it's generally not horribly well optimized, and the AI is a bit wacky, due to the checkpoint system, sometimes enemies you just passed might disappear entirely (you stealth through section A, hit a checkpoint between A&B, and all remaining section A enemies disappear)

Usually people have more issues with the game's design rather than bugs.

Mass Effect - whole series. From the imperfect combat of the first through the drawn out middle act of the second through to the heart-breaking ending of the third which still leaves me feeling a little hollow inside, I love every moment of it, flawed or not. No group of characters has ever reached me like the extended crew of the normandy and never have I been able to insert myself into a protagonist like I have with commander shepard. I have countlss completed playthroughs and although I always make similar choices, each of my shepards has told a slightly different story.

The Elder Scrolls IV/V - First Oblivion and then later Skyrim ate my life for a few hectic months before I was finally done. I can keep going back to both, even if they don't suck me in like they did at the beginning.

Portal/Portal 2 - There are few games that tell a compelling story through a silent protagonist. I normaly hate silent protagonists. Valve once again make the exception that proves the rule, like Gordon Freeman before her you care about Chell and what happens to her in this insane world of SCIENCE! Also need to mention Glados and Cave Johnson; an antagonist that you grow to love for her sadistic psychopathic nature and a character who exists mainly to drive the backstory of the antagonist who made me cry with laughter.

Assassins Creed - Series gets a slightly tentative entry bcause of its ups and downs. Personal favourites were ACII and Brohood. However, though I felt the story and protagonist of ACIII were flat to the point of boring, I LOVED the naval combat and am therefore going insane in anticipation of ACIV...

Guitar Hero - My guilty pleasure, I own 5 of the series, Warriors of Rock was by far the best IMO, but the series finally coaxed me into buying a real guitar and learn it with Rocksmith, which isn't on this list but gets an honourable mention here because of its patience with me...

Minecraft - Easily my favourite Indie success story, Minecraft is probably responsible for the most sleepless nights on this list, bar ME perhapse. when you get gripped by a project or an idea, a new concept you want to test out, it can be hard to tear yourself away. The only serious problem is you spend hours upon hours building your perfectly designed boat or castle or cathedral, then you go and look up similar projects on Youtube and then hate yourself...

There are other games that have kept me engaged during this generation, but those above captured my immagination best. These are very different worlds in which you can loose yourself, be someone else or are just so abstract that you can remove yourself entirely.

So... that's a "no" then?
