Well you said it in the OP, Goku.
But to be slightly more specific, this version of Goku;
The most innocent character I can recall.
Some of the moments in he faced still make me sad when I think about them but he always faced forward because all he wanted was peace and happiness for everybody. Fighting was just pure fun for him, seeing his limits by fighting someone stronger. He never wanted to fight villains but to protect everything, he did.

Honorable mention to, Gourry Gabriev from Slayers.
The mans an simple idiot to the point of sainthood, you can't fault him.

because he is a video-game protagonist who is actually a genuinely nice person. Video-games tend to have the tendency for violence (for understandable reasons), and even nice characters (or who we are told are nice) will beat up people or worse.

But since Ace Attorney has all the action be non-physical, that's not a problem.

Plus when threatened with violence Phoenix will most likely just run away. There's a part in the first game where a suspect punches him and he just stands there shocked.

Also Phoenix is just all-around enjoyable and funny character.
You REALLY aren't helping my Ace Attorney starved mind y'know... Cannot find my DS anywhere and I've been in the mood for an Ace Attorney binge for a while now. I suppose it got horrendously mislaid during redecorating brb buying a 3DS.

OT: I wonder what it says about my taste in fiction when I really cannot name anything truly nice without taking time to think for something... Cop-out answer incoming.

This ain't no ****** Yu Narukami. This is the good old BroSwagtagonist son!

He literally goes around solving people's problems for them with good advice and leads the Investigation Team who are hunting for the mysterious murderer whose crimes are plaguing the peaceful town of Inaba.

Also every little movement he does is calculated to produce Maximum Swag at all times.

Do characters who aren't pre-defined but only my character counts because screw other people count? Because if so, Commander Shepard.

M'yep. Sometimes you have to go with the classics. It doesn't get much more awesome do-gooder than the farmboy who set out to save the galaxy just because he had nothing better to do - at first he didn't want to, because he might disappoint his uncle by leaving the farm too early. Good Guy.

I concur with this. Goku is one of my favourite characters of all time.

Additionally I pick:

She risks everything to put an end to a war. She doesn't care which side is right or wrong, she just wants to end the senseless fighting.

I'll definitely agree with your Sora and Captain America choices OP, who wouldn't love to have Sora as a friend?

OT: Link(big surprise there) In all his incarnations he is the ideal heroic good guy.

Mario- Same as Link, Mario is just good, even if he's a little one-dimensional.

Samus Aran- Sure she maybe in it for the money as a bounty hunter, but she still saves the universe on multiple occasions and she puts herself in risk while doing so.

Master Chief- He has little emotion, but in Halo 4, he believes that his only purpose is to protect humanity, even if he doesn't stop to realize he is still human.

Sora- Like I already said, he would be the ideal friend.

Considering I really like the straight up goody two shoes characters I could probably go on forever.

-"Who watches the watchmen?"

-"Me."

-"But who watches you?"

-"I do that too."

The unbending, unbreakable force of law that is Sam Vimes is easily my favourite 'hero' in fiction as well as my favourite protagonist of the Diskworld series. Frankly he makes Batman look like the whiny little nutcase that he is and most other supposed 'super heroes' like whinging children, then to boot he's far more sympathetic and realistic too... which is hard to believe considering his companions include a werewolf, a golem, and a Nobby Nobbs among other things.

i'm gonna pull a couple from WoW lore for all the MMO players out there that every wanted to play at being a paragon of virtue or a knight in shining armour and suggest Uther the Lightbringer and Sir Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Azeroth.

it always kinda irked me that blizzard never entertained the idea of just letting Humans and especially paladins and warriors just be "cartoon heroic" in WoW.
I really like the old art for Lothar. Back when there wasn't much of a story to go by in the Warcraft series, I remember seeing the concept art of Lothar in the game manual and knowing all I needed to know about him just from the story those told. Makes me sad that Blizzard has done away with characters like that, nowadays they're all god-powered wizard warriors haunted by their past and blah blah blah. I prefer Lothar, who was just an old, tired knight doing what he felt he had to do.

There's just something extremely endearing about a simple character trying desperately to do the right thing.

Green Lantern. Because being a part of an intergalactic space police force with a ring powered by your willpower with the ability to construct anything you imagine? Yes please.

Cyclops. Because eye beams.

Cole MacGrath.

Electric powers? Yes.
Ice powers? Even better.
The ability to sacrifice yourself for the greater good of humanity? Oh yeah.

Let see-
Goku, Optimus Prime, Monkey D Luffy and Yoh (Shaman King). What they all share is they ALWAYS do the right thing well had in good mind. Optimus Prime is more serious out of the four while Luffy is more comedic out of them aswell.

Also Tenchi since he was pretty much selfless when it come to the ladies (when he said he will never forsaken any of the girls to Nagato in that final confrontation).

Lastly Captain America for being a ideal superhero (brave, selfless and doing it because it's right and not out of fame or glory).

EDIT- I almost forgot! There is also Kotetsu T. Kaburagi aka Wild Tiger from the anime Tiger and Bunny. He too is another ideal superhero like Cap but he more playful/ aloof in a good way.

Damn, I was the one who wanted to mention Sam Vimes first... T_T

Oh well, I will go for the switch-up then: The good karma characters from most Bioware and Obsidian games, but I especially love the Exile in Kotor II, since there you could be a good guy while still not being a complete wuss (like, say, kicking the collective asses of both the Serroco and the Exhange in the Nar Shaddaa slums and then tell the refugees that you need no reward since they were assholes you would have beaten either way :p). I like these characters best because you, the player, has a great amount of control over them, so if they do dumb things just to stick to the good path, the only one you can blame is yourself.

Louie/Ryu from little-known anime "Mahou Senshi Ryu"/"Rune Solder Louie". He is goofy sorcerer who isn't very smart, likes to brawl a lot and a bit of perv sometimes but is also (un)pragmatically heroic, selfless and caring, and just a nice guy. Also Melissa from the same series - I usually can't stand "holier than you and so pure" lawful good characters (and she is a priestess to boot!) but she shows a great character development through the series so I think her initial portrait is intentional that way.

The Elric Brothers are completely awesome heroes(both of them, come on, they're both the protagonists) as they manage to be complex, heroic, moral and endlessly likeable without ever becoming douchy anti-heroes.

Also props to whoever put up Vash The Stampede, I've always found Vash to be a very inspiring character due to his commitment to "Love and Peace!" in the face of unrelenting despair.

And now for some that haven't been mentioned...

Sissel from Ghost Trick, because for the most part he's just "not the kind of guy" to ever let anything bad happen to anyone. Also, no spoilers for those who are thinking of correcting me.

DOCTOR MCNINJA! Because he's a Doctor AND a Ninja... also a superhero and a pretty standup dude for the most part.

And since I can't find a good picture of him...

ATOMIC ROBO! Everyones' favorite Atomic Robot created by Nikola Tesla who goes on epic SCIENCE ADVENTURES!

i like misato katsuragi from evangelion.
When you think that she is 28 and is running NERV the way she does, she is pretty cool.

Also Fox McCloud

Just a generally brave and headstrong individual who saves the galaxy with his friends.
