I'm a fan of the old style of FPS. Screw realism and practical map layouts, fun is more important.
I don't care if I get flamed, but I prefer the Halo way. There's a story there if you want one, but it's entirely forgettable if you just want mindless fun. I think that's why it was so popular.
Done right both are great. I want from an FPS the same thing I want from the other games I play A FUN experience. Half-life was fun (the source stuff was so good), Half-Life 2 was fun (Also source was great here too), AvP2 was fun (multiplayer was awesome)... I'm drawing a blank on an FPS that sucked ass right now but someone feel free to throw something in.

I like it when a target dies when I shoot it. I like something like Left 4 Dead or Modern Warfare's Hardcore mode, so that you need to be in cover or the first 1 or 2 shots are lethal. I really hate it when I have to shoot everything 50 times, even though there's no reason enemies are so tough.
It's the variety I enjoy, being able to while away hours shooting friends, and also have the option for a more engrossing game play.mindlesspuppet said:

I hover between multiplayer, plotless FPS (TF2, Bad Company 2) and the Halflife school of FPS. I'm really open though. I enjoy Serious Sam as much as Halflife as much as TF2.

I like tons of humanoid enemies that aren't durable, normal weapons, regenerating health, destructible environments, ragdoll physics to the extreme, and some other stuff I can't think of right now.
