.... Am I a hipster.
Same here, what sort of music is it you listen to because I listen to post-rock mostly and it's not exactly a popular genre.

All that said probably my most obscure and favourite band is 'Mar' for introducing me to the genre I now love.

Barenaked Ladies certainly aren't mainstream in the UK at least. Also, Bipolar Empire are a great band from Ireland, they play my local pub on Paddy's day.

Kaizers Orchestra:
Huh, something weird happened with the embedding, you'll have to youtube it yourself.

and Týr:
It also happened here, surprise surprise :)

Both awesome scandinavian bands although very different.
Kaizers Orchestra is a strange mix of contemporary pop and alternative with a bit of folk thrown in.
I've seen them live 4 times, they're quite brilliant on-stage, playing on oil drums, wearing gas masks and not afraid to involve their audiences. One concert they invited a young guy up on stage because it was his first concert and baptised him, which everyone including him thought was awesome.

Týr is actually also folk-inspired, although they're more metal/hard rock with texts focusing on the norse mythology. Their lyrics are usually in english, except when they without warning switch over to their native language, Faeroese, which is coincidentially also the language most closely related to the old norse language.

Icon for Hire. This is why:
Brand new sign by Tooth and Nail Records. (The same label that has TFK and August Burns Red.)
I saw them live in July and they blew my mind.
<youtube=lEGfid-MN5I>

Fun story: Before the show, I got to hang with the band. (They're so small, they had to set up their own merch table!) I thought they were pretty cool, so I decided to get there early for a good spot. No need. There was no more than fifteen people there, and most of them were waiting to see someone else. Front row for me :) Two songs later, I decided to turn around and see if there were any more people. I have never seen a bigger crowd for a fringe stage band. At least a few hundred people. Awesome.

Well I don't know if they're more well known in their native Sweden, but there's a great classic rock band called Graveyard.

Also in a similar vein are Witchcraft

And finally, to complete the Swedish band trilogy, Wolverine.

Oh yeah, The Sword don't seem to get much mention anywhere either
