I'm not sure that leaving out the mentioning of Life of Brian is actually illegal here, but it should be! Anyone guilty of that is a very naughty boy! (and obviously not the messiah)

So many great films to pick from, so I'm gonna pick one from each decade:

80s: Blade Runner
70s: The Godfather & Godfather part 2
60s: Dr Strangelove
50s: North by Northwest
40s: Casablanca
30s: Duck Soup
20s: The General

There are supposedly good films from even before that, but I cant say I've seen any of them myself!

A Shot in the Dark, with Peter Sellers. It's the second Inspector Clouseau movie, it's the movie where the character truly "pops," and it is REALLY funny.

(Actually, and the movie is now old enough that this might count as a spoiler just from not enough people having seen it, watching Herbert Lom as Dreyfus become more and more unhinged as the movie goes on is just a joy.)

12 Angry Men is one of my favourite films and also one of the only black and white films I've seen. It manages to be an absolutely fantastic intense character drama despite being set mostly in one room and you never learn any of the characters names (technically you do but only right at the end and it's pointless) or even very much at all about their lives.

The acting styles have dated slightly and may seem a little bit overdramatic sometimes but it takes very little effort to adapt to that and it's totally worth it.

It's weird that you mentioned "The Meaning of Life" and "Quest for the Holy Grail" but not "Life of Brian" since to me it's the greatest comedy film ever made. "Grail" and "Life" are damn funny too but "Life of Brian" is in a league of its own.

Forbidden Planet and Silent Running are pretty much my favourite sci-fi pieces of all time.
And very little in the Western genre has ever exceeded High Noon.

Well I'm not in England, am I? I've escaped your imperialistic clutches for good! Also, Life of Brian just isn't as good as the other two. (Obligatory imo).

Hmmmm...Charade
Old Yeller
Metropolis
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Some Like It Hot

Other than that, there's Rebel Without A Cause, Lord of the Flies, The Omega Man and One, Two, Three! Shit, there's so many old movies I like that it could probably replace all the extras in either Ben-Hur or Lawrence of Arabia!

love rebel without a cause but my all time favourite is casablanca. i still get goosebumps when they sing the french national anthem in that especially considering that the tears people get in it, is because france was actually occupied at the time and alot of those actors were escaped french nationals

I just watched gone with the wind, and it was quite good. A bit melodramatic at times, like most old films, but it's balanced by a wicked sense of humor.

Citizen Kane was quite good as well, I really enjoyed it. The second half was much better then the first.

Gun to my head, I'm not sure my list of "best of the decade" movies would be any different at all. Maybe Raiders of the Lost Ark instead of Blade Runner.

Excellent taste, sir.

As I never supplied my own choices, here are a few of my favorites:

Young Frankenstein and To Be or Not to Be are probably my favorite Mel Brooks films. WarGames to this day I will list as having one of the best conceived and realized "AI gone wrong" plots in the history of cinema. Mister Roberts gave us a spectacular performance from an all-star cast. And I just plain grew up watching 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. While I'll admit that the Squid's movements are a bit stiff in the big attack, but that scene[footnote]The final cut version, not the horrifically bad 'sunset' version[/footnote] remains one of my go-to examples of effective monster effects.

I think comedy was really at its peak for American culture in the 20th century. Not saying what is popular now isn't funny, but we had some of the most funny movies ever. Doctor Strangelove was just great, especially for me since I am obsessed with that sort of culture from the 50's and 60's. I always got a kick out of The Italian Job. Ghostbusters was my first comedy movie, and it was amazing. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad world is so good people still bank on its comedy decades later.

As for science fiction, Wrath of Khan is still one of my top 5 Science Fiction movies of all time. I have a lot of admiration for Millers first two Mad Max movies, as Road Warrior is my favorite action movie.

Longest Day was from 1962 about D-day, and it had one of the biggest all star casts of any film in history, John Wayne, Sean Connery, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka, Richard Burton, to name a few. Most expensive Black and White film ever made (and done to save money in production!)

A Bridge Too Far, 1977 Film about Operation Market Garden. Another big name cast movie, and an excellent war movie.

Blazing Saddles, 1974, Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder movie, fantastically hilarious western.

Young Frankenstein, 1974 again, Mel Brooks and Gene Wiler, of course, makes fun of Frankenstein, and I actually had the pleasure of getting to see the film on the big screen at the classic movie theater in my home town. It's really fun to see a classic on the big screen if you can get the chance.

Ungh, I just have to throw it in even though the cutoff is 1990, but the movie came out in 1990 so it was made in 89...yeah, that's a stretch but I don't care. It's my favorite comedy sci fi movie of all time:

Spaced Invaders. Martians crash land in a small town on Halloween because they hear a War of the Worlds Broadcast. It's extremely funny to watch, and the special effects are hilarously dated (but still adequate, all things considered)

I really enjoy the old Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Watson. Sure, a lot of it is propaganda from World War II, but Rathbone and Bruce definitely had a chemistry between them which meant that they were perfect as Holmes and Watson. In fact, the only actors that I think captured Holmes and Watson better were Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, and Edward Hardwicke as Watson in the old Granada TV show.

Ooh. Good question. I'm not sure if I could name a favourite older film but I could give a list.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Life of Brian
Zulu
Battle of Britain
Damnbusters (whose theme is now playing in my head).
