I think I've seen this thread before in some form or other.

And a few others, but those are the main ones. I tend to like those sort of uplifting empowering types.

The Final Fantasy games have some really good ones, I feel. Dancing Mad in FFVI and Memoria in FFIX are a couple which give great atmosphere and characterisation.

I also searched through Youtube a few weeks ago for some old Spyro the Dragon music for a nostalgia trip and was blown away by the standard of music for a child's video game way back then. I think each level was given its own individual track distinct from others (in the PAL version at least) that suits the environment while staying varied and catchy. Some of its nostalgia, probably, but the sound for the game is definitely one of its best parts. Don't know how to paste a link in, but try searching for Icy Cavern or Haunted Towers for some good examples.

Bastion, Halo, Cave Story, Zelda, Persona, Dark Souls all deserve honorable mentions but the winner for me will always be Neotokyo* the Source mod. Every single track from that mod is a fucking masterpiece.

Oh godf. Everything on that soundtrack is absolutely sublime. I mean WOW. Thank you so much. While I'd heard of the mod through the folks over at facepunch I'd never known about the brilliance of the soundtrack.

All of the Mega Man Zero games had good albums, particularly 3 and 4. I really love the Demon's Crest OST, but much like the game itself it's not for everyone:

No problem. First heard Departure on these forums and that's how I fell in love with the Ost. I consider it my civic duty to spread it in every one of these threads that I see. ;D

Another game I'd like to bring forward is HoMM 4. The game might not have been the best in the series, but the music probably was
Wow, really digging those HoMM themes. That's some really great stuff. [...]
You might also want to try HoMM 2. Has a low production quality due to limitations at the time - but it has opera singers instead :)

Also, there's this handy playlist [http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB1DA969E8C03AD7B&feature=plcp] of all the all the HoMM town-themes on youtube. I've got that one bookmarked :)

Since I'am at it, my personal favourite from HoMM4:
You're all talking HoMM music and no ones even mentioned 5's haven theme yet? Tisk tisk. 5 Might not have been the best of the series, but the soundtrack was excellent!

The main title theme was also spectacular. Seriously, first time I booted the game up I just sat there gawping like an idiot till the music was done. Probably one of the best 'title' screen out there too for what it's worth.

The game was pretty terrible, if I remember correctly, but the soundtrack for Advent Rising is absolutely amazing.

Not a single mention of either Metroid Prime or Baten Kaits: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean?
I'd pay a silly amount of cash to anyone that can get me a CD of the latter. :x

The latter game had some silly hard bosses :x. That, and some luck really decided your battles :x. But that combat <3.

The Final Fantasy series, Bastion, Beyond Good and Evil and Kingdom Hearts are all my favourites, I didn't mind Bayonetta's soundtrack either.

Since you mention it in a later post, my vote is spoken for.

Daisuke Ishiwatari, the mastermind behind the Guilty Gear soundtracks. The best soundtrack out there.

Suck A Sage, Awe of She, The Midnight Carnival, Meet Again, Writhe in Pain, Still in the Dark, Existence, Nothing Out of the Ordinary, In The Arms of Death, Irony of Chaste

All of them are amazing. Even the lesser ones are still good.
I agree with this post,,Daisuke Ishiwatari is fucking awesome, and i buy any game he makes just for the soundtrack,Games like:
Hard Corps Uprising
and Blazblue

Also,i would add

and
To the Guilty Gear list

Good choices, very good ones, but the best song on the whole soundtrack is "What's Left Undone"

Erm. Aside from Bastion, Timesplitters was pretty good. Yeah, they don't make em like that any more

There are plenty more, Red Dead Redemption especially, but those are the 2 I've played most recently.

Oh, oh, before I forget, Giana Sisters - Twisted Dreams. I like the dark/punk tracks.

As always in these threads: Anything Dynamedion does! Particularly Paraworld.
Great sound to that track, though not enough games feature dnosaurs any more.

Dark souls has this amazing song I cannot stop listening to. >>
Nah I think Nameless Song tops it:

My vote goes to Dragon's Dogma:

Oh, you failed to mention this?!:
Sort of low quality but it does wonders to show the genius behind the HoMM soundtracks; that man is a legend as far as I'm concerned making such music (and if you go to the youtube video itself, you can see all the music performed in the description).
I really have no words for the music; I have no favourites, 'cos they're all amazing really ^^.

Other than being a complete sucker for HoMMM 2-5 (Heroes of Might and Magic and Music), I thoroughly enjoy music from the Elder Scrolls series, Journey, Shadow of the Colossus and others I'm likely forgetting right now.

Probably most notably:

I mentioned the Mass Effect series earlier in the thread but I'll add another piece of music from it that isn't as well known because not everyone who played ME2 bought Lair of the Shadow Broker.
The music in the final boss fight made everything so much more awesome.
