There's a portuguese proverb that says:

"Água mole em pedra dura tanto bate até que fura."

It basically says that soft water constantly hitting a hard rock will eventually pierce through it.

My mom's favorite proverb, which she misses no chance to restate, is "Everything is difficult before it is easy." I guess it's become my favorite too, over the years

Something like that. She claims it's a norwegian proverb. Not sure if that's true or it's just gramma being gramma.

I interpreted it as 'if you stay optimistic and look for good things, you'll find them'
