What are perhaps the greatest running gags, and what ones do you like? In media, in real life, or whatever... Tell me what repeated funny action you know gives you the most joy in this world.

i'm particularly fond of the 'who's on first' skit and it's various variants, like 'who's the tank'

Mine's from How I Met Your Mother, the Slap Bet. Basically, as a forfeit from a bet in the first series, one character is allowed to slap another at any time, ever, and he can do this five times. The slap can be at literally any moment, and as hard as he possibly can.

What this basically means is that, once in a while, just as you think the creators have forgotten about it[footnote]Of course, this will never happen, because HIMYM has the strongest sense of continuity I've ever seen[/footnote] Marshall will full-on backhand Barney, sending him reeling. There's even a song. And it's really good!

I DM a D&D group, and we have a few running jokes

I say "Rocks fall, everyone dies" when I need to get attention

They try to use Knowledge: Religion on every object they find (Including shoes, which, as it turns out, are Catholic)

We also insert refferences to pop culture, like when my players were about to be arrested, a guard shouted "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!"

something that another reviewer said in his review of the phantom menace has stuck with my friends and I. when looking at the neimoidian crew on teh bridge of the trade federation flagship above naboo he freaks out and screams 'OH MY GOD.....WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR FACE" he references this throught the review of this and the other 2 prequel movies. There is also the "Gators bitches wear jimmmies" line in the other guys and my ave the chicken fight on family guy.

Love that show so much.
OT: The slap bet is an awesome running gag, American Dad/Family Guy have a few good ones running throughout, just brought up after you've pretty much forgotten about them. Oh, and the show Archer. Pretty much is entirely running gags and perfect dialogue.

My brother and I do this for any game that glitches out on use. For instance, in Fable, two of my games glitched together, so that NPC were spouting current events from my evil character during my good character's playtime. I kept hearing, "You killed Whisper" or "I can't believe you kille your own sister" and "YOu killed Twinblade, teh leader of teh bandits"

SO we started mixing them up into "Stop right there criminal scum! You killed your sister, teh leader of the bandits? YOu better pay the fine!"

Or in Assassin's Creed "WHO DID THIS? WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?!?"

Four words:

"That's what she said"
For a switch up try; "That's what your mother said." It's a powerful come back when used at the right time.

Most of my current favourites are the Unskippable ones. "That was the xth time I died" and Russell the Crow etc.

That's the second greatest running gag I've ever seen!
What was the first? I did ask...
That *was* the first. It's a running gag from the Monkey Island games. "That's the second biggest ... I've ever seen!"

You had to be there maybe.
