That's the second greatest running gag I've ever seen!
What was the first? I did ask...
That *was* the first. It's a running gag from the Monkey Island games. "That's the second biggest ... I've ever seen!"

You had to be there maybe.
I have heard the joke in other places, particularly Get Smart. I wonder where it originally started...

Mine's from How I Met Your Mother, the Slap Bet. Basically, as a forfeit from a bet in the first series, one character is allowed to slap another at any time, ever, and he can do this five times. The slap can be at literally any moment, and as hard as he possibly can.

What this basically means is that, once in a while, just as you think the creators have forgotten about it[footnote]Of course, this will never happen, because HIMYM has the strongest sense of continuity I've ever seen[/footnote] Marshall will full-on backhand Barney, sending him reeling. There's even a song. And it's really good!

I love the slap bet. I keep trying to start one with my friends, and somehow twist it so I get 5 mystery slaps but...it never works...

That - as well as the 'sailboat' bit, the 'kid on escalator' bit, Jay and Silent Bob trying to sabotage the stage, Silent Bob's attemps to do the Jedi mind trick, and pretty much anything else that goes on in the movie. These are all great running gags in their own right, but the really beautiful thing is the way all those seemingly unrelated ongoings eventually combine to form a single, hilarious story.

Yes, I know that the gradual merging of initially unrelated plot threads is a very basic narrative technique, but I swear, I've never before seen it carried out with nothing but running gags!

There was a big one in South Park that they stopped doing. I'm sure a lot of you can make out which one I mean.

I GAL at this.

My favorite gag is that Luke Cage would always have this coffre machine but the machine would not get his order right.

EVERY single time.

Then one day, out of the blue, it gave him his EXACT order. He go to turn around and drink it...

only for it to drop to the ground

I have a lot, but to name a few...

-"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"
-"Surely you must be joking!" "I'm not joking, and don't call me Shirley."
-"SQUIRREL!"
-"Don't call me Prince,." "Yes, Prince Jake."
-"Prehistoric Zucchini", "The Hartley-Smoot Tariff", and "A good name for a band"
-"GET ON WITH IT!"
-?Mwah! G?night everybody!? and ?HELLLOOO NURSE!?
-?Are you pondering what I?m pondering?? ?I think so, Brain?(Cue non sequitor)?
-?Ha ha! (Double entendre)!?
?Hi, everybody!? ?Hi Doctor Nick!?
?A-CHUCK A-NORIIIIIS!? ?I AM A MAN!?
?It?s not Lupus!?
?I?ll be in my bunk.?

Points to whoever can guess where these are from.

something that another reviewer said in his review of the phantom menace has stuck with my friends and I. when looking at the neimoidian crew on teh bridge of the trade federation flagship above naboo he freaks out and screams 'OH MY GOD.....WHATS WRONG WITH YOUR FACE" he references this through the review of this and the other 2 prequel movies. There is also the "Gators bitches wear jimmmies" line in the other guys and my ave the chicken fight on family guy.
That reviewer is red letter media, and that is one of my all time favorite angry reviews.

OT: The nostalgia critic has a few running gags That i like, But my favorite running gag is the pug, as they are just so fail.

Can't you just picture it going "wre wru" and all.

I DM a D&D group, and we have a few running jokes

I say "Rocks fall, everyone dies" when I need to get attention

They try to use Knowledge: Religion on every object they find (Including shoes, which, as it turns out, are Catholic)

We also insert refferences to pop culture, like when my players were about to be arrested, a guard shouted "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!"
Are you referring to this?:

I love that comic. I always got that quote in my head whenever our DM wa getting impatiant ith a player.

OT: I don't really have a favorite one, but I always laught when a random show will break out the "These aren't the droids you are looking for", and "I've got a bad feeling about this", lines.

The Big Bang Theory has a few good ones, like Raj's inability to speak to women, Sheldon's use of the word 'Bazinga' when making a joke, and Howard's banter with his of screen mother.

Peter and the Giant chicken on Family Guy is hilarious. Just how it all just happen's mid sentence and goes on for minutes, then returns to the previous conversation as if nothing ever happened.

Not really, because RF;ED is a joke on the idea that when you piss off the DM, he will make things harder. My friend was being a jackass one week, so the fist spell cast at him reduced his int stat to 2 (Good rolls, and he had really poor int to begin with)

When you make the DM so made, he will TPK and the best way to do that is to drop rocks on people.
