Yeah, you remember those games. Those games that didn't let you see the whole version of until you paid a fee but yet you could still play a lot more than a demo version. Not many of those these days, however most of them I found while I was on the old school Mac and didn't have much to play except the original Starcraft.

A few of my favorites were these:

Realmz, by Fantasoft: Holy crap, this was probably where most of my game time went into. It was like Dungeons and Dragons simplified with character statistics, a grid based battle system, several races and classes to choose from, and multiple fantasy scenarios to play and develop your characters in. The game is now free, however no one's making much progress for creating an OSX port to run on the Intel Macs because it's a Classic Mac game. (Although not too long ago I was able to get a wine port of it from a person who got the PC version) Probably one of my favorite scenarios is called "Destroy the Necronomicon" where you explore the Abyss and take on the enemies inside the hellish bastions that jut out of the ground every so often.

Deimos Rising, by Ambrosia Software: Out of all the games I purchased, this one was probably the most aggravating yet it kept pulling me in every time I lost. It's a top down shooter where you play a spaceship with three weapons against swarms of enemies and turrets and god knows what else. It makes you angry yet at the same time it was a load of fun because you got to blow the crap out of everything that was in your way for a good half of the game levels.

Commander Keen... I had it on floppy disk, from back before it was abandonware.

Heretic, one hell of a Doom clone with magic and wizards and oh god I have to play it now.

Four floppy disks worth of pure wonder, for a ten year old anyway.

A friend raved about that one to me, but I couldn't enjoy it. I did like the backstory where Hitler was killed in a bar fight at 19, and WWII only happened because of aliens attacking.

How do I remember that after all these years and only spent maybe 15 minutes with the game?

OT: I'd say I'd have to choose between Commander Keen 4, Doom, Duke Nukem, Cosmo, and I think it was called Crystal Caverns. I just remember going through a lot of levels finding gems, and there was this cool upside down one where gravity was reversed. There was also a backstory element that was parodying the Star Trek Tribbles.

Plenty of different weapons, terrain, and environmental conditions. Play against up to nine of your friends or AIs!
