It's no secret that a large portion of us here on the Escapist enjoy a lot of different movies. So I want to know what are some of you favorite space/alien themed movies. And to make things a bit more interesting, you CAN NOT list a Star Trek or Star Wars movie in your answer.

Two of my favorite space/alien movies are Treasure Planet and Titan A.E. They were both awesome animated movies that came out when I was still pretty young and I've just always loved them.

Magnetic Rose
Galaxy Quest
The Iron Giant

There's probably more, but these are the ones I remember (and like) at this time.

Definitely The Thing and Predator.

The first was just brilliantly executed and the second introduced me to the Alien series.

Starship Troopers is really good. There actually aren't that many great movies set in space with aliens that I can think of, or at least there aren't any that I like. Both of the Riddick films were really good too, so I think I'm going to have to call my favourite Pitch Black. It's a very interesting universe and is a brilliant all-round film.

The Thing (1982). Some of the best special effects I've seen combined with paranoid suspense and gratuitous flamethrowers makes it a keeper.

Titan A.E. was a favorite of mine, growing up. As was The Iron Giant.

But if you'll excuse my soft spot for animation... I'd have to pick 2001: A Space Odyssey. Utterly amazing.

For the space movie I would have to say Moon [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/] starring Sam Rockwell. I just thought it was really well done, and Rockwell gives a great performance

Fucking genius of a film, was Moon, the miniatures were brilliant...

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy wasn't as good as it could've/should've been, but it was still silly fun.

Oh god, where to begin xD.

Alien, Aliens and yes, even Alien 3 deserves a mention here. Alien is just an outstanding sci-fi horror film with a great cast and monster, props to H.R. Giger for creating such a nightmarsih and symbolic monster. Speaking of symbolic, the themes the film provides is worth looking into as well. Aliens proves that a sequel can kick equal ass, perhaps greater, by taking the franchise into a different direction. This time, it's war. But this isn't a film about space marines kicking ass, no, it's about space marines getting their asses kicked. Over-confident soldiers being beaten ring any bells? Alien 3 isn't as good as the other films, but I still like it because it returns to the grim roots of Alien. All hope is lost here, and it's fantastic to watch. Plus Lord Tywin from Game of Thrones makes an appearance :p.

The Thing is another sci-fi horror film I love. The special effects are just amazing, beautiful even. Every incarnation of the Thing is terrifying and unique, but it's not just the thing that makes this film so great, it's the sense of paranoia of who the monster could be. You never know who is the monster until it's too late. The cast is great too, they never fail to deliver the moments of tension. So is the setting, Antarctica is a great place to have such a film because the environment is trying to kill them as well.

Starship Troopers is another sci-fi military film I adore, for the same reason as Aliens but on a much bigger and comedic scale. It's just one big piece of propaganda to recruit more soldiers. Would you like to know more?

I kinda rambled on there, but I wanted to explain my choices in a bit more detail this time.

Star Wars and Star Trek.
Because I'm a rebel.

OT: Alien is still awesome, and Predator is badass.
