Whats is you favorite type of villain? The one that wants to take over the world and nothing else. Or maybe that villain that simply murders hundreds of people just because he's evil. Or something completely different. My favorite type of villain, is the type you wouldn't really call a villain. This is the type the has different views then the protagonist,. Where the villain simply has different views and what he is doing is right in their eyes. He/she believes what their doing is the right thing, and that they are helping out, but in reality the way they go about it is wrong. Their more misguided then anything else. I usually think these villains, have more depth then most of the other ones. So whats your favorite?

I don't think I can specify a favourite type of villain, it really depends on how he's depicted.

But I guess, I always like the villains who hide just below the surface, so you can't see 'm coming.

My favorites are the ones who are just insane, like the Joker. If you're going to be bad, be funny about it.

The feminine guy who does evil for evil's sake. So needless to say, I love Osamu Tezuka's MW.

I prefer the villain that doesn't share his evil plans to rape the mayor's wife then run her over with a tractor. I like the villain that doesn't stall time, nor does he take any hostages. He doesn't stoop to an emotional level. He isn't merciful. I'd like to see that. The closest I can think of is Heath Ledger's Joker.

My favourite antagonist is when the protagonist is the evil one and the villian is actually a good guy :p

My favorite type of villain is one who you can relate to just enough that you can step into their shoes for even a second and understand what they are doing what they are doing even if it is truly heinous because that small amount of time is one of the creepiest feelings but it really brings in the fear you should have for a true villain that no other way can bring.

I agree. The insane ones are more fun and interesting. Kefka and the Joker are good, if not the best examples of an insane villain.

Personally...I wan't my villians to not only be a credible threat, but also be so terribly loathesome that even the most depraved person on the face of the Earth wants to see him dead.

Megatron comes to mind in this regard as he's not afraid to sacrifice his own troops for his own cause, even if the cause seems to make him look off his rocker. Joker makes a good villian in so much that his unpredictability makes him too difficult to nail down at times and the fact that he revels in the chaos he's causing. Kefka is perhaps one of the best as he also enjoys the pain he's causing AND actually managed to destroy the world. To quote Kefka: "Nothing beats the music of a thousand voices screaming in unison."

I think my favourite villian ever is Kreia. Bending everything to her will, constantly shifting alignment... She was hard to kill for more reasons than one.

Personaly, I prefer a villian who's simply out to prove they can do it. Obiously I look to Moriarty as the prime example of it. He never did evil/planned teh crimes to make money or gain power, but simply to see if he could, then sold the plans off to other to do the dirty work.

The kind of man who could sit down and have tea with Holmes, admit to everything (in a purely hypothetical way of course) and then stand up and start the final fight with honour.

Also, when Luthor is done right he can be a great character who's trying to be an example of human achievement over the alien who's example we can never rise to.

One that is more competent than the hero, actually has a good reason for what he is doing in contrast with the hero just blindly doing shit and actually gets a few Pet the Dog moments. Also, has a level of honor far beyond that of the hero, since the hero in such a case would kill him like a ***** while said villain would actually have an honorable duel, with a fair, level playing field.

In other words, me in an odd way.

[sub]Yes, I am serious. No, my ego is not massive. We need more honorable villains. I hate this White and Black Morality that everything has these days.[/sub]

My favourite villain is the one who has some sort of personal history with the protagonist. Like a former friend (Batman/Jason Todd or Obi-wan/anakin).

I always have a soft spot for your run-of-the-mill 'batshit crazy to the point of being genuinely frightening' type of villain. Ya know, one who just does shit because he's off his fucking rocker. Bonus points if this person is also a ridiculously hate-filled bastard.

Ah Kefka, you are the perfect villain in that regard...

I also have a fondness for the suave, cool-headed villain who approaches everything with an icy demeanour and doesn't really seem to give a shit about anything he does. Reference: Hannibal Lecter.

You mean the guy who took hostages (repeatedly, and chose them on the basis of their emotional impact), announced his plans to Batman and the cops over national TV, and pretty much did everything he did because "fuck it, why not"? He seems like almost the exact opposite of what you described :p

OT: I like a villain that wins sometimes. None of these powerless wusses who come on so tough and then get the shit beaten out of them every. single. time. until absolutely nobody is entirely clear on why they're meant to be frightening.

Do not make me link there. Then, I would be a very cruel villain, entrapping all forever in a sea of Trope and Nostalgia.

The intelligent ones, the ones that you don't know about untill you're trapped in a corner, and then they stab you in the back.

Thank You for that. I think you just made my otherwise dull day.
