Freaking so in-depth!
It masquerades as a kids show but behind it all is a dark and emotional story, the episode "Finn the human" and "Jake the dog" are evidence of such a thing.
Not to mention the great characters and their backstory, I honestly think the Ice King may have the most tragic past of any villain in any show...

I freaking ADORE Code Geass even after all these years. I don't think anything has yet beaten it in the needless melodrama department. It has one of the best opening episodes of anything yet, it sets the scene perfectly, sets up Lelouch as a character and is damn cool.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya stands the test of time as well. God some of the Youtube videos on that anime were posted 6 years ago I feel so fucking old now.
It STILL never gets old.
I loved Fairly Odd Parents when I was younger as well. I would assume it's still fun to watch today when i'm 19.
Higurashi forever holds a special place in my heart even if I end up never watching it again. Seeing as it was the thing that made me really start to appreciate a good mystery story. That and a group of highschool friends straight out of your average romantic comedy/slice of life anime suddenly turning on each other and killing each other in more horrific ways each time is... Interesting. To say the least.
Don't worry, they all respawn a month later.

Anime - Haibane Renmei, 'cos its cute and fluffy, but has a lot of emotional impact when necessary. And... *sigh* K-On!... however, added to those are Aria (plus sequels), Gunslinger Girl (bit iffy about Il Teatrino and the manga's better), and Last Exile.
The venture bros, I think. What can I say I find it funny and it taps into some of my nostalgia. Also 21 and 24. Best henchmen ever.

If we're talking animation, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is definitely my favorite. Well paced, efficient, beautiful, and moving.
It's a toss-up between Avatar and MLP.
Both are pretty good at characters and plots, as well as some fun worldbuilding. And superb animation and voice acting, of course.
They just put in so much effort it's crazy, and that really pays off.

Transformers G1 (Yes I like tranforming robot but it had great characters and the classic good vs evil story).
Batman: TAS (PRetty much what got me into liking superhero due to how Batman was portray in that series).
One Piece (Has great characters and an amazing and indepth universe).
Freakazoid (Funniest show ever!)
Tom & Jerry (It was entertaining to watched back then).

I loved the odd schemes for just two mice to take over the world and the voice acting is awesome. I still watch it now when I can and when someone asks me what I want to do tonight I often reply with "The same thing we do every night, [insert name here]. Try to take over the world!"

Is the last season any good? I started watching but lost interest when noticed that the episodes were 20m long and had voices since what I liked most of the previous episodes was the fact that they were just bit sized stories that used their short duration and lack of context to show something fresh and new.SckizoBoy said:

Futurama: Basicly from all of those FOX shows (Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, etc) its the one I like the most due to the effort in to keeping the characters acting like themselfs instead of just for the plot. Another cool thing is that there is also a big effort in continuity.
I watch too much animated stuff to pick just one favorite. At the moment I'm quite into Sword Art Online, mostly because the setting is quite literally my ideal kind of MMO. People whine about the main character a lot but I still love it, I don't care. If you love old school, ball-buster MMOs and love anime, it's worth checking out.

Haha, me and my brother did this for The Angry Beavers. I was Norbit and he was Dagget, good times. But I gotta compliment you on your taste, Pinky and the Brain was many levels more clever than it got credit for and is also a fond childhood memory of mine.thejarofdirt882 said:Probably... It's a show that captures everything about cool. Robots, Explosions, More Robots, Sweet Music, Likable Characters, Robots.
Also it makes fun of anime's at times.
Oh, probably Cowboy Bebop. Honorable mention for old Simpsons.
Are those really "cartoons", though? When I think "cartoons" I think more...Looney Tunes. If being animated means you're a "Cartoon", wouldn't Pixar or Studio Ghibli be cartoons? Because we're wandering into some tricksy territory if they are.

I'd say south park or futurama, solely because they're the only 2 cartoons I still watch regularly, and I have done for many years now.
I'd probably give it to Futurama though, because as well as what was mentioned above in terms of characters and continuity, they also have some stunning episodes that hit you right in the feels. It kind of reminds me of scrubs, in the way it has some proper dramatic moments/episodes in amongst the comedy.

From my childhood
Ed, Edd and Eddy. Let's put it this way, I can still quote it as a grown adult to a friend of mine or to my sister and we still find it funny.
Teen Titans, the TV show. I am not even into superhero stuff, but I just really liked the stories and the characters. I especially liked Raven, which I am sure had nothing to do with my "Goth phase" when younger.
Overall
Invader Zim. Typical Jhonen Vasquez insanity. It's pretty much the epitome of the once overused word "random". It's strange for the sake of being strange, incredibly over the top and I love the art design and characters.
Anime
Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The art style is gorgeous, the story is excellent and moving, and it's very intelligently made. It's also not what you'd expect if you looked at it's cover art, it's just amazing.
Mardock Scramble. I have only seen part one of three as the other two are not out yet, but something about it has me hooked. I loved the style, the cyberpunk setting and it's complex story. It's surprisingly unknown.
Darker Than Black Season 1. One of the first anime's I ever watched and I still love it. The characters are excellent, the plot is interesting and it's a great mixture of action with a light touch of humour without it being distracting.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. I love cyberpunk, I love anime with a more serious tone and with a compelling and believable story. The characters are brilliant, the pacing is very well done and it also has some of the best OST's I have ever heard.
Others that I won't go into why or I'd be here all day, in no particular order are Code Geass, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Elfen Lied, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Neon Genesis Evangelion, K-On!, Angel Beats! and Ergo Proxy.

Even if I were to include anime into the factorising, my favourite cartoon still stands as Rugrats.
It wasn't the first cartoon I watched but it was the first I ever brought a VCR tape of. I would get at least one Rugrats video for each Birthday and Christmas I had, and I grew up along with the series. Along with growing up with the series I grew up alongside the humour and characters. There was comedy that I understood better from the perspective of a child and comedy I learnt about as I got older, and in being able to see it from both perspectives I was able to cherish both viewpoints. It's a show I loved back in the day and love to this day. I love the characters, the stories, the imagination, and the humour. All 30+ VCR tapes I have of the series, most brought but some recorded, are the very reason I still have a VCR player in my room.
As for cartoons and anime that are still airing and producing new episodes, well, One Piece is my second favourite on the cartoon/anime list, just behind Rugrats. If I were to disregard the anime factor then I would say My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a series I love to the point of investing a lot of my time in writing fanfiction for it (something I had only ever done before with Kirby and Super Smash Bros video games).

My two favourite cartoons as a kid were Gargoyles and a (quite obscure) CG cartoon called Excalibur.
Gargoyles was a fantastic mix of slapstick and melodrama. I can still remember the scene in the first episode where Goliath kneels with the gravel that (he thinks) is all that is left of his beloved running between his fingers. "Angel of the night! Nooooo!"
Excalibur was pretty much single-handedly responsible for getting me interested in CG animation and effects. It had to be made cheaply enough for TV, so you could really "see the strings" (if that makes sense). Clothing was skin tight and hair firmly fixed whenever possible. And (for some reason) the same texture was often used for both a character's clothing and their horse's skin! Since the main character wore bright green and her friend wore black-and-white stripes, they had a very funny looking horses.
