Uh... Corruption of Champions? I can technically play it without DRM, so there's that...

Hm, but aside from that fantastic work... I wanted to say Dungeons of Dredmor but it seems that that's almost 300MB< which shocked me.

*Checks Steam library*
Seems I don't possess many games under 300MB.

Pretty much any Amiga game actually. Secret of Monkey Island, Times of Lore, Lemmings, etc.
Secret of Monkey Island, a great game. I had that and SoMI2 on the Amiga. The second game came in at 12 floppy disks, or about 8 Megs. You knew a game was large on the Amiga when it asked you to insert any disc with a number > 2 :)

I think that was actually the biggest single game I ever saw on the Amiga. I might have a check next time I can get to my old disks, wherever they are! But if we're gonna go Amiga games, then I'll have to throw Speedball 2 into the fray. Best. Sports Game. Ever.

Head Over Heels loads up less than 40K off the tape (excluding 7K of loading screen).

3D Deathchase was under 9K, but I never found that as good as everyone else did.

But yeah. This thread could easily be renamed to "favourite game that's either some weird indie shit or was released pre-about 1996 (or whenever it was that the CD became the dominant medium for game distribution)".

SimCity 2000
SimCity
SimFarm
SimTower
All the good bombermans
All I'd add to this is SimSafari (I *believe* that was under 100mb) and that is pretty much my list. Love the old Sim games, especially SimTower.

True, but being someone who never played games until he was fourteen, most of my favourite games are the PS2/Gamecube/XBox era and I rarely dabble in older games unless they're instalments in a favourite series like Castlevania or Metroid. I made this thread with the idea of naming recent (less than 5 years) games whose content and enjoyment made you question it's file size.

Doom, Terraria, and Puzzle quest? I suppose I should count all the classic SNES games, but that seems a little unfair, given that all console based games never really account for file size unless you are emulating. I prefer to keep this question framed in a "what light weight, or super old PC game do you like"

Easy. It's Heretic. 18 MB of pure awesomeness. I replayed through it a couple of weeks ago and had a blast.

But...but....

I can't pick just one!

Terraria
Doom
Doom 2
Grand Theft Auto 2
Zork
Solar 2
Lode Runner: The Legend Returns
Lyle in Cube Sector
Geometry Wars
Solar Vengeance
Netstorm
Escape from Puppy Death Factory

I could be at this for a while. I'll just stop.

[sub][sub]for now...[/sub][/sub]

But if I HAD to pick just one from that list...

Honestly, it's a toss up between Doom 2 and Lode Runner:TLR. Many countless hours were lost in those having fun with friends.

The Road War series could prolly be under 100 meg -combined-, but it was just awesome.

I don't have a mind for disc space until I have to delete stuff, so that's about all I know. :p Tired, too. Cannae concentrate.

Wish they'd remake Road War onto android, or something.

Aside from the aforementioned Terraria, Papers Please and VVVVVV, And Yet It Moves is a 60 MB puzzle platformer that is pretty fun.

Pretty much any non-CD based console in the 90s and earlier would've had games smaller than that so my pick would probably be Super Metroid. If we're just going PC though I'd have to go with The Binding of Isaac. Less than 40 megs and I have a good 300 hours in it. Would have more if my current computer would play the damn thing.
Was Isaac initially less than 100 mb? As it stands now with Wrath of the Lamb, it's over 300 according to Steam.
Presumably you bought the soundtrack (or did it come free with Wrath of the Lamb? I can't remember). That takes up most of the space. I removed the soundtrack from my Steam folder and the game in there is around 40 megs, however if I check it in Steam it says it's over 300mb. I guess Steam doesn't account for you removing things. Same with Fez. I bought the soundtrack and moved it to another folder. The game is around 500mb but Steam says it's about twice that.

I liked a lot of GBA games like Golden Sun, but my favourite game under 100mb would be Super Hexagon. It's such mindless fun, especially considering that the only real punishment for failure is pressing another button to get *immediately* back to the action.

Without a doubt it's Calm Until Night Time. Only 40 MB and it's an awesome little ascii RPG. Unfortunately it only works on Windows 7 so most people probably can't play it but it's a fantastic game and I'd recommend it to anyone who has Windows 7.

It's just a little indie ascii game but the battle system is great and the customisation towards the end of the game is insane. Imagine one of the older final fantasy games but throw in the ability to make custom equipment, items and spells. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it's hilarious at times. Takes about 10 hours to finish but there's loads of side-quests to do too. It's got cameos from all over the place (Pacman, Leeroy Jenkins, Bowser, Emerald Weapon etc.). It's just a fucking great game.
