Half-Life. Dammit, the lack of a train ride in Half-Life 2 was a big disappointment for me.

Pretty good for something released in 1997.

Half-Life
That tram ride is amazing. I can't wait for Black Mesa so I can experience it in all new glory.

Lost Odyssey
The way that intro movie blends so seamlessly with that first battle is incredible. I still have no idea how they managed it.

Quake 2
I nominate Quake 2 for the "Best introductory cinematic ever made" award. Soundtrack by Rob Zombie and Sonic Mayhem. You ride into war in something not much bigger than a coffin, and it all goes to hell before you've even hit the atmosphere - then it gets worse.

Warhammer 40,000 - Dawn Of War
I was at Games Day 2008 a few days ago, and one of the Golden Demon entries was a diorama re-creation of the part in the intro movie where the Dreadnought gets the melta-charge slapped onto its' arm amidst the rest of the carnage. Very, very awesome.

I've already stated that my favourite intro was that of Gun, both the movie at the start and the gameplay intro, especially with the music. I probably helped that I got said intro music stuck in my head while on a kayaking trip down a river none of you have ever heard of.
but I would like to say what my least favourite was that of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, it made absolutely no sense. I think I read in Old Man Murray or some similair place that it was as if the game and the intro were made by two different companies making completely different games.

This is a game about Nazis, to be fair later on there are zombies, but I was little when I first played it and didn't get past the entrance to the crypt out of fear.

Dawn of War has an amazing intro clip, I'm sure someone said it already but just in case.

Watch [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFkFo5SBx-g&feature=related] Note the battlecry at 35 seconds.

Final Fantasy VIII. It's the best piece of CGI I have ever seen in a video game, sure it looks dated but no one can deny it's style and epic feel.

Half-Life 2 AND Half-Life 2: Episode 1 both start brilliantly.

Half-Life 1 had a good intro the first couple times, but when you've played it as often as I have it gets to the point of "C'mon! Let's get to the crowbar already!"

Bioshock's intro scared the shit out of me. Big ol' pillar in the middle of the Atlantic? And that Spider-Splicer that jumps the Bathysphere before the game will even let you move. I thought for sure I was screwed even before I started playing!

I love the Half Life 2, Bioshock, Kingdom Hearts, Command and Conquer 3, Final Fantasy 8 and Battlefield 2142 had some really great intros, from the excellent setting of tone in Bioshock, and the excellent use of music in most of the above, and some really nice, interesting animation.

Though, my utmost favourite has to be FEAR's intro. The music was excellent, and the clip was awesome, to say the least.

Actually, would anyone know the name and artist of the song played in FEAR's opening? I'd love it if someone, if they knew, could PM me.

Final Fantasy X for me, also
WOW and the TBC expansion (and add WOTLK),
and another vote for Half Life.

Oh its mere seconds, but the attract sequences on Killer Instinct arcade certainly did their job, too. Nothing said 'Hey look at me, I'm new!' like Killer Instinct.

Grim Fandango. Watching it again gives me the itch to go and play through it all again...

I totally agree with the Bioshock and Half-Life crowd. Honestly can't think of anything that really beats those two.

  • Rise and shine, missster Freeman. Rise and... shine. Not that I wish to imply you have been sleeping on the-job, no one is more deserving of a ressst, and all the effort in the world would have gone to waste until, well, let's just say your 'hour' has come again.
Half-Life 2, Homeworld, Bioshock.
