I gotta say my favorite is HIGH ON FIRE. One of the heaviest bands ive ever heard. if you get the chance check out the songs, turk, rumors of war, and return to nod. really low/rough vocals, i love it

Abney Park - Steampunk (So obscure its not even a real music genre)
Giant Squid - Post Metal with a creepy dark sound you can't find too many places
The Melvins - And unappreciated founder of Sludge Metal and great pioneers of grunge, hardcore punk, and heavy metal
Voodoo Glow Skulls - A more hardcore side of Ska
Tub Ring - Not much to explain here
Foxy Shazam - Cinci locals created from a freak crossbreeding of My Chemical Romance and Queen

Of all the metal bands mentioned in this thread so far, I've listened to every single one except for a few. Try harder!

My suggestions have to be:
Exhale, an awesome deathgrind band that not many people have heard. You'll love these guys if you liked Nasum.
Dawnbringer, a weird mashup of doom, thrash and heavy metal with a touch of black. Tell me that doesn't sound awesome!
Abolishment of Hate, a one man project death metal band. Unless you're from Toronto or something, it's unlikely you've heard them.
Oskoreien, another project band, this time black metal. The first EP is available on their website for pay-what-you-want.
Renascent, symphonic tech/black metal.
Solefald, avant-garde metal.

"P-S-Y-C-H-O S-T-I-C-K. That's how you spell our name. Get it f$%@ing right. OR WE'LL BURN DOWN YOUR CLUB."
Not only do they have a song called "beer", but they have a song called "beer, part 2" as well as one called "death burger", with a sequel song "return of the DEATH BURGER" They're drunken maniacs that do only one thing: metal.

The Knife is about as obscure as you can get. (WARNING: Really trippy/creepy, possibly to the point of NSFW)
Seriously, whoever wrote the lyrics about "I lost my teeth in a dream again" has some serious issues.

Love them both!

Mine would have to be Theocracy (a Christian metal band) and Powerwolf (a very UN-Christian metal band)

Thrice. They're very prolific, but still relatively obscure. They are probably one of the most musically talented bands that has ever existed, and I don't say that lightly.
Their lead singer is such a cool guy. Really friendly and easy to hang out with.

Anywho, my vote is for Thrice or Too Late the Hero.

The only bands I can think of off the top of my head that are obscure enough to count would be..

Innerpartysystem

Flesh Field

Neuroticfish

Neuroticfish may be more well known in Europe, but in the US these are all unknowns.
"Remember when you ran away and I got on my knees and begged you not to leave because I'd go beserk?
They're coming to take me away, haha, heehee..."

And I'm even from the states....

Also, pissing razors is good stuff, as is... The Arctic Monkeys. Mmhmm.
