When they let me, I like to be...well in Shadowrun terms, I like to be the "Face", or to put it a different way, I like to prioritize charisma so I can talk my way out of things...which far more often than not isn't a dedicated choice and usually has only a few opportunities to really shine. After that...I want to like the rogue, but I usually can't. It's usually too mechanically boring and risky (at the same time, as often as not, as odd as that sounds), so I usually default to warrior in the case of open world combat and mage in the case of more turn based combat. KoTOR being the major exception there because sentinel ended up far too easy to max out compared to the other classes.

I like any sort of Warrior-Mage combo. Battlemage, Spellsword, Arcane Warrior etc

I hate the idea of an over specialized squishy mage. My character is the hero and he or she is going to be that insufferable sort of person who has a science phd and plays sport at an olympic level in real life.

Because in real life people aren't balanced, some have far greater advantages than others. There's no reason a person couldn't train at arms in the morning and learn magic in the afternoon if they're dedicated enough.

The problem is that in games these characters are either way OP (dragon age I'm looking at you or weak because they split attributes and perks.)

Depends on the setting, but usually a stealth sniper type, whether that be with firearms or bows. With a backup of being decent in hand to hand but generally using smaller weapons.

I tend to go with RPGs that have more freeform characters like CP2020 and the Bethesda FPRPGs, so talking about strict classes may not be wholly appropriate.

The few MMOs I've tried I've gone for a 2handed melee character, they generally feel the most straightforward.

Really depends on the game. High Fantasy, favorite is always rogue. For space, I like pilots (making a GM do starfighter combat just for me every so often makes me laugh.) Urban fantasy, I tend to go with scholars or historians. And in my favorite game Deadlands, I'm the Huckster. That doesn't mean much though, I'm usually our game's GM.

What type of RPG? In general I like my hybrids but which ones depends.

If it's a party based single player RPG I'll usually play the "face" or generalist/utility class (usually a rouge or bard. Shaman or Decker in shadowrun). Most of the time your dialogue options are checked against your main character so having high values in stats like charisma is useful and you might as well play something that capitalises on that. I like having a broad selection of skills and utility on my main so that so I can easily change out the rest of the party to whatever I feel like and have my own character fill any gaps. Specialist classes in a party based RPG are better from a min maxing perspective most of the time but rarely do I need to min max. Ranged or melee doesn't matter to me in a non action RPG.

In MMORPGS (unless I'm playing as if it was a solo game) I usually go for a ranged damage dealer or CC/debuffer. I prefer ranged because it makes it easer to see what is going on.

In action RPGs I like playing melee rouges or spellswords. I like being quick but squishy, like setting up traps and like having some CC.

Ahhh, so we're asking this question again? Sure, why not, I could use another excuse for a post. :3

My motto is "Go Mage or Go Home." Unless, of course, the magic in the game you're playing sucks *cough*Skyrim*cough*, in which case I prefer to go stabby-stabby rogue.

Generally I prefer a DPS class. I'm too lazy/irresponsible to want to tank or heal.

In a single character game with no defined class system, like Skyrim, I will usually be a jack of all trades or a mage type. In party based games like Bravely Default (The class system of which is orgasm inducing levels of good.), I build a party with a heavy tank fighter, the best pure healing class, the most powerful offensive mage available, and then fill the remaining slot with a light fighter of some sort.

Depends. By myself, I'd prefer a class that requires some thought, like a rogue or a spell caster who isn't of the instant nuking variety. Basically, I want to avoid reaching a point where my stats alone end up playing the game for me.

With friends, I like to be a support class, like a cleric or a buffing spellcaster.

Guy With Bow and Arrow, whether you decide to call it archer, or bowman, or ranger, or whatever. If it's Guy With Bow and Arrow who Also Sometimes Casts Spells, great.

Alternately, Guy Who Messes With Time. At the moment I'm digging the Temporal Warden in the roguelike TOME.

In most videogame rpgs I don't really have a preference, but having recently started playing Pathfinder with a group of friends, first as a ranger and now as a summoner, I gota say I'm loving the hell out of the full spellcaster a lot more. Mainly because at level 3 I can summon off of a massive list of versatile creatures 8 times per day, have a ridiculously powerful (and so far, impossible to hit) melee dps eidolon companion, and a ton of useful spells (6 cantrips, 4 once per day spell like abilities, 4 level 1 spells for crowd control and protection). Out of all the encounters we've had so far in our 6 player group, my eidolon is probably responsible for around half of the kills by itself, neither of us has been hit once and my spells have been amazingly useful every time. In short, Pathfinder summoner is op and I fucking love it.

Either a hard frontline tank or something rogue/assassin-ish. So either someone who can take a hit for the team and shrug it off or someone who never takes a hit in the first place.

Magic users are for nerds and backline support classes are for cowards.

But don't tell the medics I said that.

I don't know if this is "classic", because its not in the earliest rpgs, but I've always loved playing tanks. Being able to survive where others couldn't simply through sheer durability, I always get a kick out of playing games that way.

I'll break it down by sub-genres:

In JRPG's my favourite one is a Monk. High damage, high HP count, great evasion. Oh, and sometimes monks have something beyound just damage dealing, like self heal, or posion-removing skill. The fact that they fight with their fists adds to coolness. Yeah, as soon your warrior gets his/her late game equipment, the importance of monk fades, but I still bring them to the final battle.

I hadn't played too many ARPG's, but judging by the way I play Engineer in Torchlight 2, in those games I like tanky guys that can deal a lot of AoE damage.

As for traditional WRPG's, I'd say whichever class is the best at persuasion. If any PC class can become the persuation master, then I'll go for someone with big mace, tons of HP and heaviest possible armor. Probably because dealing with all the magic is more of a hassle then enjoyment. Why would I pick mage if most spells are useless (as it is in most cases) and I'll end up just throwing trusty fireballs if I can pick warrior and just hack it out? Only for roleplaying reasons, probably.
But if it is a "free-class" WRPG (like Shadowrun, Or Arcanum) I'll always make someone persuasive, with a single weapon specialization (preferably ranged) and something for fun (decking in Shadowrun, for example) with maybe some abilities for summoning additional aid.

I'd also like to make a special mention towards classes/characters that can fight in close range AND be healers.

When I started playing MMORPG's and RPG's I always went for the magic using backbench DPS guys. I shifted more towards tanking in MMO's though, really enjoy that. In singleplayer RPG's I still often play the finger-wiggling mage, but I equally enjoy going for the rogue / assassin archetype. Or the tank as well, problem is that few singleplayers really do them justice.

Minions. I. Like. Having. Minions.

Whether through necromancy or summoning, I typically like playing classes that make a bunch of other things to kill things for them.
