Surprised nobody's mentioned Earthbound, not a hidden gem by all means, but a great game nonetheless.

Because it never came out in the UK... and the original Phantasy Stars also came with strategy guides...

I didn't say it was the only game ever to come with a strategy guide.

But it certainly was the first I had ever seen

it came in a giant box

Earthworm Jim, possibly not just the best SNES game, but also a serious contender for the 'Most awesome thing EVAAAR' award.

oh oh oh I forgot a few that I feel ashamed to have not listed:

-Bahamut lagoon: if you have not played it get a damn emulator and GO PLAY IT, especially if your a big fire emblem fan.

-Ogre Battle saga: just made of pure win.

-Star Ocean: I'm glad they remade this for the PSP I have had a blast with it.

-Killer instinct: BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER

-Super baseball 2020: I despise sports games, but the classic consoles did something that EA cant..make sports games FUN and INNOVATIVE

As for "hidden gems"...
Well, try Actraiser and Soul Blazer.
Actraiser is a mix of old fashion sidescroller with swords (Magic Sword) and Sim City.

Soul Blazer is a bit of Zelda but less emphasis on puzzles and more on overhead view sword fighting/action/spells. And not to forget a really great 16 bit soundtrack too.

They're true hidden gems, they didn't get much love back in the day and they're not generally remembered now. They're from Enix, back before they merged with Squaresoft to become Square/Enix.

Finally, if you're playing on an emulator, try to find Seiken Densetsu 3, it's a MUCH improved sequel to Secret of Mana, it's been fan translated for a long time now online as a ROM, and it's a real shame it never made it outside of Japan.

If you want a good hard side scrolling shooter, try Earthworm Jim or Cybernator.
Fantastic advice! I've never played Actraiser or Soul Blazer before, but I've got Seiken Densetsu 3 and I've been playing it for 8 hours straight. Thanks so much for the advice, I must eat something now...

Haha, I was just thinking about this game earlier today, for no particular reason. Good stuff.
