You mean Lara Croft, right? Speaking of which, that new Tomb Raider game looks amazing:

Escapist is still broken I see. So who the hell knows what your post said.
Good to know I'm not the only person getting this.

OT: I'd have to say Ophelia from Brutal Legend is still one of my favourites, as her character was not only well established, but was also well developed and evolved well with the story too. Plus she was voiced by Jennifer Hale. Here's a pic to remind y'all:

Trip from Odyssey to the west, I figure.
Don't know why, really. I suppose she's just the only character I've ever felt I've bonded with. I always insisted on carrying her on my back instead of having her follow me.

Samus has been repeatedly mentioned already so I'll say Anya from "Gears of War."

With Ocarina of Times' Zelda as second-favorite.

Doesn't 'Other M' prove otherwise? I haven't played it but I have heard negative things about it.
What are you talking about? There was never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, evereververveverever a Metroid game called "Other M".

Anyway, Samus is my choice too, because she is genuinely strong and courageous, but still has a human side as seen in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Those games and Zero Mission also showed that she has a potentially really fascinating childhood and upbringing. I love Samus and there was not a game called Other M.

I like Samus a lot, but mine are a toss-up between Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2 and Bad Girl from No More Heroes.

I love Alyx because she's fun, not a burden on the player and very human.

Bad Girl, on the other hand, is insane, rude, violent, psychotic, quite attractive, and just plain fun to watch and to fight.

Iji's a rather excellent protagonist, and changes a good deal according to your playstyle, which I really liked.

Marisa and Suwako (from the Touhou games), meanwhile, are just amusingly demented, but get a spot here all the same. Suwako also happens to be an incredibly fun, if confusing character in the latest fighting game spinoff, so there's that.

Raiden... oh wait.

Seriously though mine has to go to Tali from Mass Effect, something about that voice and the fact you can't see her darn face...

Gah, the stereotype is right, there really aren't that many well-developed female characters in games....

Let me think...

Well, I'm going to have to second Kreia. She was actually pretty awesome, even though she constantly annoyed my Light-Sided exile.

How about Jade from Beyond Good and Evil? She actually was a real fleshed out character vs pretty much anyone that isn't Lara Croft.

Well, I wouldn't call her my favorite, but I feel like a lot of people (particularly on the Escapist) demonized Miranda from Mass Effect 2. I really don't think she's just there for sex appeal (though they definitely played that angle, given the amount of arse shots they felt the need to put into her cutscenes). I think she was one of the best fleshed out (pun not intended) characters. Certainly one of the most interesting backstories. And unlike with many other excessively beautiful characters, the flawless look they gave her has good reasoning behind it.

Another gripe I would agree with his that she doesn't wear armor. Though she's a biotic, and quickshooter sort of character. Arguably this could be compared to mages/rangers in fantasy games (arguably damage inflicting classes, rather than abuse soaking tanks) wearing cloth and leather over actual effective armor, for lightness and maneuverability. That's my speculation, anyway.

As for my actual favorite female game character... maybe Commander Keyes from Halo? She seemed to be one of those female characters that managed to work as an independent fighter without acting like a PVC clad Catwoman-esque slut fighter. Case in point busting through the window in a Pelican to rescue johnson, dual wielding weapons and taking out Brutes. She was also seen to be an effective leader.

This is just an attempt at a decision though. This is one of those things where I never really reach a decision.

Yep I agree with you there. She's not just solidly "bad ass girl" nor is she helpless. She is a nice middle ground that makes her feel very realistic.
Also she's rather pretty.

Naoto Shirogane from Persona 4 is an easy win for me. Is it the looks? Yes. Personality? Yes. Character development? Yes. The fact that she's a reverse trap with blue hair? Hellz to the fuck yeah. Pretty much every line of dialogue (hooray for spoken dialogue!) left me going "d'awww". And blue hair, man. Blue hair. My only weakness. Aside from (reverse) traps.

I loved Trishka from Bulletstorm. It may have been OTT, but they didn't do anything by the half and it led to a character I really liked.
