These two would be examples of how characters are misused in anime. Too many are introduced but not given enough to do, or if they are thrown a bone it's usually just to have them be shown up by the main protagonist even though the main protagonist is usually the LEAST interesting character in the entire show. Also pretty much the reason I hate most anime protagonists, the idiot hero types who barrel through everything while the ones who should win are strangled by the writing staff.

Spoiler: This guy I like for a different reason

He and Baird probably have the most real characters for the world they live in. Baird hides behind cynicism while Cole copes by becoming a walking stereotype. Both of them let their masks drop at the right times to show how frustrated and unhappy they are with their situations then put them back on when they need to find the strength to keep going.
