Well, it's been a while since I did an inane topic like this, but hey, they're fun sometimes.

So what's your final level? I don't mean your favourite. I mean the one where the themes, or music, or place in the story, or any reason you can think of, makes you think "You know, if I could choose one final level that just says me then it'd be this one."

Is it the Northern Crater?
The Fortress of Regrets?
Hell?

I cannot wait for your juicy answers, brethren. I feed on them.

My final level is in the darkest corner of my own brain. Within I must fight through seemingly endless waves of my own nightmares before coming face to face with my Final Boss: My Suicidal Thought. He looks exactly like me but is covered with fatal wounds (bullet holes to the temples, slit wrists and a stretched neck).

There's a trick to this boss; how do you fight your suicidal thought? If you kill it then you give it what it wants but if it kills you then it completes its purpose.

I am-a confused. Did you mean to imagine our own final level or choose something that fits us?

I like my final levels brutally bleak and gruesome. You should be actively wondering if everything's going to be okay right up until the moment you step through the massive iron front door leading to the final confrontation, if not after then. In particular I enjoyed the deserted stormy castle at the end of Twilight Princess, and Death Heim in the second Actraiser- there are dead angels littering the mountain path, and in the difficult process of getting to the end of it you shall slay over 50 minor demons plus most of the bosses again with your sword.

Lots of levels include such a revisit of bosses, places or characters you're seen throughout the game. It's all the more jarring when they (the characters or locations) are slowly dying and the only way to stop it is to finish this. And even then, it may be too late. The final boss will certainly tell you so.

Hmm... The Meat Circus from Psychonauts.

I think that final level sums me up quite nicely.

Taking down Ragnaros the Fire Lord in Molten Core, at the appropriate level with a 40 man raid, not cheesing it at level 80.

it would have to be a HL2 style citadel, the final boss is the summoner of nightmares for all mankind. the fight takes place right at the top, he is defeated (after a long, hard fight) by being forced to look into all the pure thoughts humanity has.

I don't need your final level! I'll make my own final level! With blackjack, and hookers! In fact, forget the blackjack and the final level!

OT: I've never really thought about it.

Maybe a castle like that one halfway through Final Fantasy IX that makes the lowest level weapons the ones that do the highest damage, and the best weapons in the game are reduced to dealing 1 point per hit.

I could laugh at the player, and be all "Hah, you spent twenty hours grinding out those ultimate weapons, and they're useless in this dungeon!"

It would probably be something akin to Retro Game Challenge. A random level from any of the hundreds of games I own, but the purpose being that once I win, I get to stop playing and go outside.

my last level would be something that delivers horrible payoff to a brilliant buildup and appears to be based on ideas that are pure genius but are not realized properly because of lazy craftsmanship. and if you glitch through the wall at just the right space a sign says: fuck it, i was lazy, the beer was cheap and i got payed either way.

In a GameMaker game I already made my ideal final level, which I sadly can't publish.

After surviving through many levels with stupidly easy to "you stupid troll!" difficulty, all of which are possible though. At the end you're cornered by all of the enemies you've been evading and then they slowly move towards you, putting all your efforts to avoid them in vain, which has you get captured.

Then the leader boards come up, and you're given a small room to explore, but you're trapped with no way out.

An unending corridor full of many horrors designed to stop you from getting to whats at the end.

Whats at the end? Not even i know, all i know is that no one must have it.

I'd have to go with the old standby... the first is the last.

Or I can just have TVTropes explain it:
(Yes, TVTropes)

I guess this might happen a lot in life though. One might, for instance, return to their home town where they grew up as a child, perhaps return to the place where he or she had met the love of his/her life, etc.

My final level would be through my hometown. I would fight through it's enemies in an unrelenting gale. What the enemies would be....I don't know. It could be my subconsious demons, whatever.
Eventually I would get to the place in which reside my most potent childhood memories, one of my old houses. My favourite, in fact...
That would be where my final battle would take place....alongside my favourite game characters. Narrowed down to two. I can't even decide that now.

The deepest, most terrifying and most utterly nonsensical phase of a bad shroom trip.

Make of that what you will.

Definitely something like the final level in Just Cause 2, where you jump from missile to missile, disabling them, saving various countries around the world, and as you disable them, you fight the president of a fictional country.

I'm going to have to go with my hometown. There's just something beautifully poetic about it. Naturally, when I left it was bright and sunny; when I return it's pouring with rain and some of the buildings may have been levelled.

Standing in the main street, the rain plastering my hair to my face, the music swells to a near deafening level as the beast fixes its bloodshot eyes on me. I tighten my grip on the sword handle, take a deep breath, and charge.
