The first console I bought myself?
The Wii, or if it counts the Gameboy (both at, or close to, release)
The first console I was the major user of in the house would be the N64 but when the GameCube released I really went out of the way to play a lot more than any other family member.
My father owns all the Nintendo consoles and I have played the NES/SNES also but that was before an age I can actually remember understand the game etc.

I believe it was either a NES with Super Mario/Duck Hunt, or the SNES with Donkey Kong and Super Mario All Stars.
The earliest gaming system I had was definitely the Gameboy Color, however, back with the original Pokemon games.

My first gaming experience was with my grandfathers game boy and hunt for red October, god that game was hard. First console was the other big gray box, the play station. My parents got me three(!!!) games that day, Rebel Assault II, Rascal, and Ape Escape (heavenly chorus). Rascal and Rebel Assault were kinda shit on a stick, but I remember dutifully playing and beating them, it didn't matter though because Ape Escape was a goddamn miracle and the best early 3-d platformer and I don't give a fuck what anyone says, yes, better than Mario 64. I later traded in those two shit games for the first crash bandicoot, ahhhhh good times. Simpler times, megaman legends, wipeout, jumping flash, arc the lad, Einhander, Symphony of the night, WILD ARMS, fucking FF7, so many awesome memories from that ugly box.

Playstation (the first one). Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped.

But my first journey into the wonderful lands of Video games was on a PC running MS DOS (the original Duke Nukem, Scorched Earth that sort of thing, and of cause being Danish I also played a fair bit of Hugo).

My first console was the NES, and boy do I have fond memories of that little grey box, right from zapping ducks with the light gun to punching one eyed cavemen in Trog, I had many years of fun with it. I even managed to get myself a game genie which made some of those impossible games playable, I had that console for 7 years, but once I gave it to my cousins they broke it in 2 days, sigh, at least I still have my SNES.

I've been playing video games at home since 1984 and I have never owned a console. My first COMPUTER was a second hand Spectrum ZX which we latter upgraded to the venerable Commodore 64 (with 1541 floppy drive and 1084 colour monitor) which lasted right up until the Intel 286sx...I'll probably never own a console.

Why are we excluding handhelds from this thread? My old Gameboy Color gave me countless hours of fun. Games like Mario, Donkey Kong Country, Pokemon Gold, Spiderman etc were my first video games and 6 year old me absolutely loved them.

The first console I owned was the classic fat PlayStation 2. Man did I ever love that machine. The first two games I owned for it were Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex and some Army Man game. That machine had easily the best library out of any console that came before it. Games like the Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, Timesplitters etc were amazing and I played the fuck out of them.

One of the biggest regrets of my life is trading in my old PS2 and my games to get an Xbox 360. Stupid, stupid young Drummodino wanted a next gen console but couldn't pony up $1000 for a PS3. I was at the age where I wanted to play "serious" games, I thought myself too mature for titles like Ratchet & Clank.

The thing was, all of my friends eventually got PS3s and I couldn't play with them. Eventually I sold my 360 for about a quarter of what I initially paid for it, and got a cheap PS3 from a friend who got it with a TV bundle.

I miss my reliable old PS2. So many good memories with that thing.

God. Yes. Don't even talk to me about kingdom hearts man, I've been wanting to play it so badly, I just beat TLoU on survivor and I can't stomach another grizzled protagonist right now, I need some spiky hair, a corny speech about the power of friendship, and a motherfucking keyblade.

and you are totally right, the PS2 had without a doubt the greatest third party support of any console before or since. Just bought the Jak Hd collection to relive some memories, hoping the Ratchet and Clank collections are coming soon.

The Ratchet & Clank games have already been given the HD treatment, you can get them off the PSN store. I've been playing the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix and it is freaking incredible. I've never played Chain of Memories before and I'm loving it.

The first console I actually owned was the N64. My father had a PS1, but I was way to young at the time to play with it - I just watched.
But man, once I had that N64, I was the happiest boy alive. I don't remember what my first game was, but I do remember what my most important game was: Lylat Wars, the Starfox game.

I still have that N64. It's that special edition that's partially transparent, so you can see all the parts inside it. It still works, and we still sometimes hook it up to have fun with it (mostly Smash Brothers). Alas, I lost my original gamepad, which was also transparent.

The games came on cassette tape.
That's how ancient I am. :p

But we had such amazing games.

My first console was the Coleco Telstar Arcade http://www.pong-story.com/coleco_arcade.htm

After that it was the Odessey2. My sister had a Vic-20 and I had a C64. Then it has been the staples, Nintendo, Playstation, with a few PCs thown in the mix.

My first real console I suppose was a NES, back in Christmas '90. I still have it and one of these days I'll plug it back in to make sure it still works. Before the NES we had an old Commodore of some sort but I can't remember which model. I know I was (trying to) play it when I was 6 or 7 (so in '88/'89) but how/when we got it is lost to the sands of time.

All you adorable little scamps with your first consoles being PlayStations, N64s and later machines..

Edit: just tested my NES and it still works! Ya fuckin' beauty.

Ooh, I was rather late to the console scene seeing as my parents wouldnt let me get one until i learned how to ride a bike (and i couldn't do it for the life of me). When I finally did it, however, my first console choice was a gamecube, and that was a good choice indeed. Spiderman 2 the game, super smash bros, resident evil 4, eternal darkness, those games were my jam.

That would be either the Atari 2600 or the Atari 25XE, I honestly don't remember which I had first.

First console where gaming became a serious hobby though was the Master System II with Operation Wolf.

My house was a PC stronghold, I remember navigating DOS menus when I was just 3 on an IBM. The first (and only family console) was a Playstation that my father got for attending multiple computing conferences.
