Trying to play Wolfenstein 3D, but chickening out (then again, I was 4 years old). Solution? Letting my older sister play instead and just 'guiding' her around.

When I was five I played through Myst, that had some annoying parts, can't remember what they were though.

Beating the bloody water level in Super Mario for game boy. I did it once but died pretty early in the next level.

Probably Escape from Monkey Island (the 1st one).
Some of the puzzles in that went completely by me (I was only roughly 5/6 at the time), so it ended up being...

-Scan the screen as much as possible.
-If something popped up, try to pick it up.
-If it couldn't be picked up, try using stuff on it.
-Repeat.

Of course there was more of a method to it than this, but some of the puzzles were literaly solved just by using random Item A on random Item B.

My first proper challenge was the Scarabanian Temple in Abe's Oddysee.
I solved it by leaving the game and doing it some 10 years later :p

From what I can remember it was Shining Force II on Sega genesis, I got the caravan and didn't know what it could do, that was a long time ago, the last one that stumped me was the piano puzzle in Silent Hill 1 when it came out.

Trying to beat the first of the ELite Four with a level 60 Pidgey in Pokémon Yellow. And no random trainers left to kick around. The solution was to start a new game and exploit [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlDRlXyp9HM] your way into getting a Mew.

I think mine would be playing California dreams on the old NES.
Trying to get through the rollerblading level. I was rather young back then though.

I couldn't get more than halfway in Alex Kidd in Miracle World on the original Sega Master System.

Then a friend at school told me that as long as I had 200 coins, I could hold up on the d-pad and mash button 2 to continue from the level I died at.

First I can remember was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in the Kakariko Well dungeon. I had gotten that far without once learning you could throw bombs. It took me 3 years of random playing every few months until I accidentally learned how to do it.

It wasn't my first but it was the most memorable. It was GTA 3 and it was the telephone mission where you had to race for the Diablos. I was horrible at driving so instead of doing it the way I was supposed to I made a wall of tanks my useing the tank cheat about ten times and placing them across the street. It worked and I made it to the finish line.

]Personally, mine was when I lived in Brazil, and I got a Game Boy Color. I started playing Pokemon Blue and couldn't figure out how to leave the starting house. My mom pointed it out...I felt shamed.

You guys?
Holy monkey fuck, that's exactly the same as mine, minus the Brazil part.
Weird...

My first gaming challenge was figuring out how much lead to use to shoot that last [censored] Space Invader... solved it through brute-force experimentation and good chunk of a week's allowance in quarters.

Yeah, and she didn't just point it out, she did the exiting of the house for me.
*Shame*

Total ditto. I think I was even 7 as well.
