So I sort of started with Doom when I was six at my cousin's house. My parents walked in, saw what I was playing, and freaked out accordingly. I was pushed away from mature titles so strongly that they weren't even allowed to be brought up in conversation.

Then I played Half Life 2 when it came out. It was at a friend's house and I blasted through the game in two sittings. It was the game that made me love PC gaming and the experience that showed me that there was no harm in a little violence and a little horror.

Good times for sure.

GTA: San Andreas across a few friend's houses. The violence and open-endedness blew me away. I wasn't able to buy it for myself until about 6 years later.
Same situation for me, totally worth it.

Funny question, because evidently (from looking at games mentioned plus ages of playing them) I'm older than a lot of people here, and yet I don't consider there to have been any mature games (that I played) through my childhood. I certainly wouldn't describe Doom or Mortal Kombat as mature games.

Lemme just do a little experiment. Would you consider this a mature song?

And would you consider this a mature song?

One of those I'd have happily listened to (and did) when I was younger, and the other one I'd have been repulsed by. As an adult, my feelings of each are reversed. So what exactly does mature mean?

Just IMO, but I think this is a good example of a game advert aimed at children:

Tell me, what does mature mean?

I found a copy of Doom on one of those "100 bazillion top shareware programs" CDs when I was in the sixth grade, and it was love at first sight. I still remember the "oh shit" feeling I got the first time I saw a Baron of Hell take a rocket to the face without going down.
