Offline Goldeneye. While I had tried other games, it was the first competitive game that I sank a sizeable amount of time towards.

Online Call of Duty 4. Again I had tried a few games online before, (BF 2142, Age of Mythology, Warcraft 3) but CoD4 was the first game that I played online for an extended period of time, and it also made me realise how much fun it was to play with aggressive strangers over the internet.

pre-1.6 Counter Strike.

Played it at a LAN cafe, got my ass kicked so very hard... when I finally got a kill on the guy who was murdering me, yelled BOOYAH out loud. Yea I was a nub.

I believe it was Unreal Tournament 2004. That or Runescape but I wouldn't really class that as 'competitive' multiplayer.

Street Fighter 2. My first experience was actually playing against my dad in an arcade we came across during a trip we took. The place had just opened so it was dead and, unlike most times during that era, the machine (and arcade in general) was empty. I ended up winning though I had no idea what I was doing. I was a huge fan of martial arts movies though so I was totally hooked by the "fighters from all over the world compete to prove they're the best" motif.

Next time I played was in an arcade back home. Still didn't know what I was doing and got stomped.. by the AI. I do rememeber guys who could actually play the game chuckling in the background at my ineptitude. This actually got me fired up and as soon I could get my hands on the game when it came out for the SNES I was locked in. I honestly played SF2 and all of it's various incarnationa, right through the SNES version of SFA2 every single day.

Playing Bomberman with my cousin and brother ( on the same pc ), as well as Worms ^.^ Oh such fun times.
And if you by multiplayer mean online, then that would be Counter Strike 1.6.

Most of my first multiplayer were old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games but most were co-op. The first competitive multiplayer was Command and Conquer. I hated the game but my older brother wanted a human to play against. The other would be Duke Nukem, I still a toddler at the time so when I versed my brother it was pretty much don't kill me, let me win! I never played online since if I couldn't win a single match against my brother in any game (the two most common ones being quake and nerf arena blast) I wouldn't be able to win a single one online. Though I set the bar a little high because my brother is "that guy".

DOOM, yes DOOM. My friends and I actually hauled our state of the art 486 desktops (no laptops then) to each other houses to play. We had to make our own serial cross cables back then.

The first multiplayer I ever experienced was in Donkey Kong 64, and the only other player was my little sister. Since I was the only one who actually played the single player, I got bored of winning all the time. Then we got Mario Kart 64 and figured out she's really good at racing games.

I was 7 and some of my big brother's friends were playing CS in the local internet cafe.

Didn't go so well, I managed to kill some dudes by random chance (they didn't bother explaining who was on my side or what I was supposed to be doing) and a hostage. Later on I tried some other games like Unreal and Quake.

The first multi-player game I bought and played was Modern Warfare 2, loads of fun.

I think the first local multiplayer game I played would have been either Mario Kart 64 or Diddy Kong Racing (I got them both at the same time). Both were awesome.

As for Online multiplayer... the first one that I played for a significant amount of time (all the previous ones weren't good enough to play more than once, so I don't remember them well) was Warhawk, which I enjoyed for a very long time.

Edit: I suppose there's also Runescape. It had really good PVP.

Delta Force Black Hawk Down on ps2.

I was a king at that game...and the maps were huge, great for sniping.

I still play it, but only the PC version now, which is much better.

Wizball on the C64 was a revalation, back then most games with a "multiplayer" mode were just hotseat, like, say, Pacman.

It probably wasn't my first, but it stands out because it had was a shoot-em-up with asymetric co-op game play with an upgrade system, incredibly innovative to me at the time. My and a friend took a whole day to beat it together. <3

Sonic the hedgehog 2. Me and anyone from my best friend to my nanna would compete against each other in the 2 player mode of that game.

I also remember playing many old fps' in LAN matches with my uncles, and my best mate. Duke 3D, Doom, unreal and a few others I really can't remember.

Oh yeah, I remember!

Way before finally getting DSL in my shitty little town I got a new sweet PC (200 MHz!!!!) and kept the old one right next to it on the same huge desk. I'd play Diablo 1 via IPX/SPX. This was actually two PC's directly hooked up, NO router (it'd be a few years before I'd even hear about such a strange device...)! NETBUIE ftw ;-)

This was 1997, and it RULED ^^

EDIT: Oh, we talking 2 player CO-OP? I don't count that as actual multiplayer... Multiplayer to me is each person get's their own machine. Probably around 1989 then with PONG.

Easy, for me it was PONG, and no im not trolling anyone here, when i was about 5 years old my father brought home a shiny new PONG console, (i think it was called familivision) and it had 2 player vs mode, my and my brother played for hours this was in the mid 70s, the console was so rudimentary that the "controlers" where atached to it, it run on batteries and the sounds (bip and bup there was TWO of them) came from a little speaker inside it, great times, years after that came mariokart on the snes (countless hours) and then the absolute kings of my childhood Mariokart64 and Goldeneye (countless broken controllers), my first online multiplayer was starcraft.

Not sure but probably Mario Bros (before they went super) or it could have been Bubble Bobble on the C64, the first multiplayer to hook me though was Street Fighter 2 championship edition.

First online I have no idea maybe Halo 2 but no online multiplayer has hooked me yet even in fighting games I much prefer playing people face to face.
