My first play-through?
1) Paragon, as an adept. Saved the council, saved Wrex, talked Garrus out of killing the doctor.
2) Saved Ashley, 'cause Kaidan hit on me and it was creepy. :p
3) I freed the Rachni queen, largely because Liara asked me to.
4) I romanced Liara, because I have a thing for blue girls.

I thought renegade was more fun than paragon. I see a lot of people did not like Kaiden. I was ok with him, but I could not stand Ashley. She seemed to think too highly of herself... plus she was kind of racist. I was not all that sad to see her go. I killed the Rachni Queen and the council. Oh, and Wrex never got a chance to take Saren's head because I shot him. I was kind of going all out with the renegade business.
'Most', of the Kaiden hate is from men *cough* jealousy cos he has a sexy voice *cough* ;-) I blimming love Kaiden!

Love that game, after I finish Mass Effect 3 I'm going to start from the very beginning and continuously play through all 3 games.
Mind if I join you in that plan? :) That is totally what I will be doing when 3 comes out, I already have my best ending save ready for 3 but will most likely re do it all nearer the time.
Be my guest, but the idea for me at least is to start a new character, a new Shepard (change his face too) and just play it how I feel and see how it goes, doesn't matter that I'll know what happens in each game, taking one character straight through all 3 games will be a bit different I think, can't wait for that.
I will try the beginning without a save at first just so I can see what the immediate differences are, which I did with 2 but didn't like the game's assumption that if you didn't buy the first game you must be an asshole ;-) There could have been questions in the shuttle on the way from the 'Lazarus', facility to set the tone, iygwim?

There is a scene near the beginning of the 2nd game where you are asked questions about the events in the first game. Now I always answer these according to what I did do in the first game, so I don't know if you choose a different response that it changes anything.

Yes I know, what I mean though is the very scene with Miranda and TIM where she states that Shepard let the council die (which was a renegade act in the first) and the game assumes you killed Wrex on Virmire and chooses which of Kaiden or Ashley you left to die dependant on your sex in ME2 3 questions was all it would have taken to set the tone of your game for yourself.

I was as much of a paragon as I could. But I accidentally chose a few renegade options.
I saved the Rachni queen.I had no reason to kill her.
I saved Ashley.Kaidan was annoying.
I sexed up Liara because she was the only lesbian partner.

That makes sense, and I would have to agree. Kaiden's voice is a little sexy.

My first play I was mostly paragon (though I love how this game lets you play as a mixture of both). I saved Kaidan on Virmire mostly because he was the one I'd assigned to guard the bomb, and I figured it was more important to secure that bomb. Mission took priority over everything else. I also chose to save the Rachni queen, though this was easily one of the hardest decisions during that first run. On one hand, I didn't want to commit genocide. On another, I didn't want to unleash a potentially dangerous alien on an unprepared galaxy. My Shep made the decision my rationalizing that the galaxy was already familiar with the rachni and they'd be better prepared to defend against them should the queen betray us. And if the queen didn't betray us, then she'd make a potent ally. I didn't romance anyone during that first run through. My Shep was very pragmatic and businesslike. No time for romance when the mission's on the line. In subsequent plays I saw all three romances through, though with different characters.

Paragon, saved Kaiden, Ashley's ugly, annoying and increibly racist.
Saved the Rachni queen, saved the council, and didn't have it on with any shipmates. Oh well.

Initially file I did the following...

1. Vanguard, male default appearance Shepard
2. Renegade/Neutral (Did deceive the undercover agent to have herself killed in Noveria)
3. Romanced and subsequently saved Ashley
4. Spared Wrex who was apart of my posse with Garrus. (Wrex was the muscle, Garrus the wing man.)
5. Killed Rachni
6. Killed the Council

In my second file I was female with a custom appearance and Paragon. Frankly while the professional, to the letter of the law approach was enjoyable, I found myself deviating more to the neutral options, yearning for the hostile, no nonsense attitude derived from a Renegade. While some Renegade options are suspect to the extent of unnecessary humor (Punching the reporter for example) I found the experience significantly more entertaining. Consequently I have heard Femshep is superior as a renegade whereas Maleshep is good either way.

Oh, as for Ashley/Kaiden. I had nary a qualm with either and was somewhat disappointed a worthwhile portion of Kaiden's development was regulated to only Femsheps. Both were intriguing, albeit Ashley possessed a notion of humor, primarily if you rid her own her xenophobia.
