Title says it all. I'd like you to talk about your first time attending a video game convention, if indeed you've ever been to one. Whether you had fun there or not, what kind of impact it might have had on you, when it took place, etc

I'll get the ball rolling by talking about mine. I was very young, maybe seven or eight years old, and it was around the time the PS1 and N64 were coming out. As now, I was living in the UK, and my family and I were visiting some relatives in Norfolk (a county on the east side of the country). A lot of the kids of our family were just getting into video games and so our parents decided to take us to this place that had been advertised to have a lot to do with it.

So they took us over, to this big warehouse that had been rented out for use by the convention. I'd never realised before that moment just how many people (mostly families) besides myself were into video games, as this was long before my family ever got decent internet connection. There were all these display lorries/trucks around (you know, the kind whose sides open up for you to step inside and play on pre-prepared consoles with set games), showing stuff like the then-upcoming Mario 64 and the like. And there were so many people just talking about games amongst themselves, even adults, which was a BIG surprise for me at the time. And, of course, there were the usual announcers talking about upcoming games, and a bunch of others stuff I didn't really understand at that time, or even remember today.

I remember having a great deal of fun there, even though it was the only convention or gathering of gamers I ever really went to. Obvious, given the year it took place, it was much smaller than what VGC's are today, especially since it was in Britain instead of the USA. In fact I think there was only a thousand people at most in that warehouse. Although that could just be me remembering it being bigger than it was, with me having been so young at the time.

Well, that's my story, feel free to tell your own.

Eh, the one I wasn't to was crowed, stuffy and with a few asshole who think it's funny to shove a camera at someone who clearly doesn't like it. They would only give you drink in plastic cups with no lids which is a nightmare in a crowd.I didn't have enough money to buy merchandise and there wasn't a lot I wanted anyway (I live in a small country, other video game conventions probably have more stuff). The stations to play demos of upcoming games were too much of pain to access and there weren't very many of them. I give no fucks for meeting celebrities, minor or not. The cage fighting was at least fun to watch.

So yeah, not too impressed.

Never been to one. I'm not much of a big crowd person.

Have been to a couple smaller events though. Back when Starcraft 2 was big I went to a couple local 'barcraft' things where instead of sports it was SC2 playing on the TV's with a suitably nerdy audience. Those were pretty fun.

There was a tiny tiny con in ghent once which took up almost half of the smallest hall in the center. Out of a grand total of 10 booths (yes that's right, 10!) there were only three who were halfway interesting.

There was the Gears of war booth, which was inside a limo where you could play a four minute demo. But both of us there were not into Xbox so we skipped it. The line was super long, but just because they only had two screens for a four minute demo. And if you had some pseudo game tester/asshole who wanted to run into every wall and try to jump of every cliff to see if they could get the game to crash, you'd end up waiting a long time.

There was the god of war (2? can't remember...) which was cool. Except my friend went all pseudo game tester/ashhole on me, so I spent 20 minutes outside, waiting for him to finally finish the fucking one level we got to play.

The ps3 reveal had a two hour line. Which was amazing since there were max 1000 people there. There was a fastlane which was only for contest winners and idiots since you could buy a ticket for it. People coming out were totally nonplussed about what they'd seen.

There was a Magic playing area, with a grand total of 7 players there, which must have been fun for that last odd player. There were no goodies, at all. We got a sticker from some booth girl who didn't want to give us one each, but insisted on giving us one 'to share'...

There was no bar there, and the drinks machine did not work, so we had to walk over to some other hall where there was a gardening fair going on to be able to get some drinks.

On the other hand, I just got home from gamescom, which was actually worse on so many levels. First off, while walking by the BLOPS III stand, i overheard some guy saying :"oh look, the line is only 2,5 hours, that's super cool"...
Secondly, nerdpitstank! Thirdly, German cosplayers getting mad at you for walking into their shot (which they're taking in between the two busiest stands in the entire convention). Lastly, I got to play one game because I knew the guy in charge of the line. Any other games had a bazillion people queuing.

I'd like to go to a con one day, when I've got the money and the time, but I'm a bit concerned.
I'm not at all a sociable person, but I seem to have a face that says `come talk to me, strangers!`. Also I'm not huge on crowds.

But I want to go mostly for the stuff there. It seems like it would be a fun thing to do.

I doubt the Pokemon championship cound as game con? I know the MCM Expo definitely doesn't count as a game con either despite having one or two gaming stands.

The first time I went to New York Comic-Con it was fun, albeit very crowded and smelly. The second year I went it was not fun, and it became crowded and smelly. My favorite part of the first year was the anime expo which covered the entire top floor of the convention center, and the second year anime expo was absent and the entire top floor was not in use.

I've never been to one. Argentina isn't a terribly videogame-y country, and I'm not about to travel to go to a convention.

I'm more of an anime convention guy. It just so happens that they tend to have video games in 'em as well.

I've always been interested in attending one, but I'm not sure which one is worth the effort.

I've seen how crowded some conventions get and I want to be able to get my money's worth or at least get to see a good portion of content that I will enjoy.

So any suggestions and tips are welcomed.

I've been to very few conventions and they were all pretty well spaced out too. Otakon 06 and Horrorfind 06 were the closest together but aside from that, the only other one I've been to was MAGfest back in...2012 or 2013. It was a year where Erin and Jontron were still doing game grumps but I didn't meet them because they got sick. I did however meet Projared, Linkara (so freaking cool!), The One Sci-Fi Guy (who I knew but wasn't sure of his name...it was awkward for me especially since HE chatted ME up), The Continue?! trio, Stutterin' Craig, AVGN and, Mother-Fucker Mike...it was a great con! I got a Famicom that doesn't work but I also got a bunch of Japanese GBA games and Pokemon Green which DO work. A rom-hack of Super Mario Bros on the Genesis, Sweet Home and Mother which all work...it was a really good time. I really wish I had the money (or prestige) to attend more conventions in general...maybe some day.
