I think I've voted for this several times and had several different answers, but this time I'm going to have to say Black Ops. No other game has given me so much enjoyment in so little time.

Starcraft 2.
As a spectator sport as much as a game to play ... I mean, in the space of months, fortunes have been made playing this game, some of the greatest starcraft players over the past decade have made their presence known, and Gretech is gearing up to run tournaments with total prize pools in excess of US$1,500,000 in 2011.

Starcraft 2 isn't a game, it's the second chapter of a phenomenon.

Mass Effect 2. I think I had 8 playthroughs in one year. I haven't played most games more than once ever.

Hmmm. Been playing a lot of Ass Creed, but I think Red Dead Redemption has been the most time consuming and the best.

RDR for its craftsmanship, but I've been playing L4D2 more than anything out this year.

Well, I played Dragon Age this year, but I started playing it when it came out in 09, so it probably shouldn't count. For best game that I first started playing in 10, it has to be Red Dead. I loved the story, loved the ascetics, loved the soundtrack, and loved the gameplay. It was fun, immersive, it didn't overstay its welcome, and it boasts an ending that nearly made me cry. And I'm a pretty cynical *****, so that's a mean feat.

Hmm... not sure. Minecraft, Touhou Hisoutensoku, or Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I suppose.

Coincidentally, all indie games.

Red Dead Redemption. Has any game made me come close to crying at the ending? No. Therefore Red Dead owns.

Play The Darkness. That was heartbreaking.
I played The Darkness, and wasn't too keen on it. I do know what happens though, and I think I would have probably been upset if I had played it all the way through. But John Marston is my favourite protagonist ever!

Mega Man Zero Collection, followed closely by Starcraft 2.

MMZ has pretty much everything I could ask for in a platformer. Awesome challenge, powerful badass playable character with awesome weapons and abilities, awesome enemies (normal enemies actually look like threatening war machines, as opposed to the toylike robots from the original Mega Man games) awesome level design, and an addictive ranking system (*kills boss* "What? My score was 96/100? I can do better than that! *reloads game and plays through level again, gets 97/100).

Starcraft 2 has its fair share of awesomeness as well. I loved the achievement system, the campaign's upgrade system, and all the improvements they made over Starcraft 1. Many good times were had this summer when I had a friend over for some 2v2 sessions. And the sight of my fleet of Brood Lords hurling their offspring at a crumbling Terran stronghold is very, very, satisfying.

Kingdom Hearts 1. I finished it for the first time in '10, so as you said in the OP, it counts.

I played a pretty wide variety of games this year, including going back to quite a few older ones, if only to finally capture all the flags in Jerusalem, so I don't think I got into that phase of being sucked into a game for literally months like I did with, say, Oblivion or Fallout 3.

That said, though, the games I have replayed the most and sunk the most hours into would be either Mass Effect 2 or Fable III. Yes, I know people hate Fable III, and I don't hold that against anyone, but I personally love it to death, so much so that it made me want to give Fable II (which I hated) a second chance. So those are my games of the year.

I am unfortunately at a stage where I work long hours to pay got games, and have hardly any time to play them. Also, ridiculous costs in Australia mean that I'm usually having to wait a few months to buy cheap on eBay.

For me, GotY is Assassin's Creed II. AC:B continued it on nicely, and I also very much enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins. I wish there were more truly awesome games like that, rather than washy half-masterpieces like the rest.
