A game that didn't pop out on the radar very much but I do enjoy playing from time to time when I need an old school type game with a fresh face is Aces of the Galaxy. Its an XBLA game, and I guess the best way to describe it is if Starfox knocked up Galaga 88 and they had a HD child with 88's graphics and StarFox's psudo 3D look.

I found Fallout 3 to the most immersive game I've played this year, possibly the most immersive I've ever played. It has a massive, detailed environment with memorable characters and involved, rewarding side quests. I know I sound like an advertisement, but seriously, it's that good.
Comparing it to other games, they just don't hold up.
Seconded. There wasn't one place i saw while on my wasteland travels that didn't affect me in some way. from the innards of rivett city to the small town neighbors who acted a little bit too 'stepford' for their own good.

Assassin's Creed. And yes, it's from this year, because I'm a PC guy through and through, and Ubi released it in April. :p

It's got its flaws - lots of them, in fact which make it one of the most sadistic games I've ever played:
They give you a exitingly fresh scenario you can dive into - but it comes with an overdone and poorly invented meta-scenario.
The give you brilliantly designed cities to freely roam - but getting there annoys you to death.
The game is full of wonderful voice acting - but you character speaks like he comes straight out of LA (and yes, I know why, but it still sucks)*.
They did a really great job at porting the gamepad controls to keyboard and mouse - but they didn't tart it up for PC (like reworking it in a way that Altair really does what you want him to).

And the list goes on and on and on, and it really makes me want to smash my keyboard in anger. But it only shows that I care, and I do - because after all, Assassin's Creed is a deeply immersive, fun-to-play game, and I don't want to stop it.

But please, developers? Give the sequel more time.

* By the way, I need to install the German version - that flaw has been eliminated.

I did order fallout 3 but it hasnt arrived yet.
So i'd have to say left 4 dead and world at war. Apart from Counter strike. i dont normaly play multiplayer, but those two changed it.

GotY: L4D
Honorable Mention: Spore
Most Overrated: Fallout 3 (Runner up: MGS4)

While I like Fallout 3, it just doesn't do anything particularly new, and I feel that's really important in a game of the year title. L4D showed us how co-op games SHOULD be done, and it deserves to be lauded for that.

I should also note that I didn't get a chance to play Braid or No More Heroes, but based on what I heard about them they'd probably also be contenders for my GotY award.

The game for me this year is Crysis Warhead, not for the Single Player campaign or the Multiplayer, but the CryENGINE2 Sandbox has kept me occupied ever since. It's a bit like living your dream as a game designer. :D

I was going to mention Warhead, but since its an expansion, decided not to. I didnt like Far Cry 2 and mnay others found it dispointing.

Me:
1. Fallout 3 (With 32ish hours in 4 days so far)
2. Call of duty 4 (Multiplayer is still returned to every so often)
3. Far Cry 2 (Played it till I was sick of it)
4. World of Goo (Finished all levels, with a few OCDs)
5. Mirrors Edge (For looking so new)

Biggest dissapointment ever was Swat4: Stetchkov Syndicate, for straying so far from the ROE.
