I'm pretty sure there have been topics like this or even this exact topic (so I apologize if there is), but I thought I'd make one now, since it's been just over a month since the end of 2011, and honestly, I'm a bit sad that 2012 might not have as many amazing games as 2011.

There's BioShock Infinite, Diablo III, Animal Crossing 3DS, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, Mass Effect 3, and a few other great titles that I'm forgetting. There will be some games announced at E3 as well, but I just feel like this year won't be as great of a year as 2011.

My Game of the Year for 2011 is still undecided, but my most-played game of 2011 is probably Minecraft. What's yours?

Catherine. Great, challenging gameplay and a fun story with cool characters. I'm very optimistic about this year.

I had a pretty close match up for Game of the Year for me, but I'm going to boil it down to two games: Portal 2, for insanely fun puzzles and wonderful, hilarious writing, and LA Noire, for it's mystery puzzle solving approach to gameplay and a story worthy of a high quality crime movie (though the action stuff with Kelso at the end was a let down).

Yeah, that thread's been probably made a dozen times before, but hey, it's always fun to discuss great games.
My Best Of 2011 would go along those lines:
1. Bastion
2. Portal 2
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

You might be looking for Skyrim in the top 3, in which case KEEP FUCKING LOOKING

But in all seriousness, Bastion is my GOTY as well as GOAT (Game of All Time in case you're thick) because of it's ingenious design, the way it combines gameplay and storytelling and the extreme feeling of responsibility to your choices that I haven't found in any other game.

Portal 2 was kind of a given, because it has everything I love in a game: Excellent writing (which is not only the best in all gaming, but it stands amongst the best writing work in history of cinema as well), amazing, deep story, fun puzzles and an awesome, brain-straining co-op.

DE:HR had many gameplay downfalls keeping it from perfection, but what I loved most was the actual dilemma of the topic it tackles, which, when you think about it, is less obvious than it seems: what makes us human? Where stand the boundaries between man and machine? Is converting ourselves more and more into fail-safe mechanicas parts a path to destruction or the next step in evolution? Touching these subjects in an adult manner is what can make a good game an amazing piece of art, and that's exactly what DE:HR is.

A few months ago it was Skyrim, but now looking back at it my favorite was Bastion. Definitely within the top 5 of games I have played.

For me it either Human Revolution or Portal 2 with Bastion close behind.

2011 was an odd sort of year. The overall standard was high, but there weren't any great outstanding games.

I can't decide between Portal 2 and Skyrim so I'll fence sit and say both.

Gotta say I loved Resistance 3. Great end to the story. I also thought LBP2 was awesome.

Every now and then, I play a game that has a real impact on me. For 2011, that game would be Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

The game definitely isn't perfect, but I thought the whole thing blended together excellently and impressively. I did not expect myself to get as sucked into the game as I did, but it really was a joy and an experience to play through to the end. I loved the aesthetic, the music, the atmosphere, the issues and questions it raises. I even loved Adam Jensen as the protagonist.

The whole thing was surprisingly involving. I've played through it 3 times already, and I still intend on playing it even more.

Following closely behind Deus Ex:HR as my personal GOTY for 2011 is Batman: Arkham City.

2011 was the year of a bunch of really good games but no great games. If I had to pick I'd be doing good to narrow it down to my top five in no particular order. They would be Skyrim, Portal 2, Arkham City, Saints Row: The Third, and Minecraft. Each of those games though for as good as they are (and they are all really good) just didn't have that special something to seem truly great to me.

I suppose technically Old Republic came out last year and that would take my GOTY easily but I really didn't get into it until the very final week of the year and didn't start really logging loads of time until mid January.

Bottom line I would say technically my Game of the Year is Star Wars: Old Republic with second place being a five way tie between Skyrim, Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, Saints Row The Third, and Minecraft.

1. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, hands down best of the year; on my third play through right now and it gets better every time
a close 2nd
2. Batman Arkham City, its been the only game other than Batman Arkham Asylum and Borderlands where I've actually gone for Platinum

I would have to say that of the games I played from 2011, my GOTY would have to go to Uncharted 3. Due to the fact that I had more fun playing that than Skyrim and Arkham City combined. No that either of those games are bad, I was just able to put them down after a while and not come back to them a little later. With Uncharted I did a straight play though, only stopping for bathroom breaks and a sandwich. I was so enthralled with it, and had so much fun.

If I had to pick a second place it would go to Portal 2. It's very close to Uncharted 3, just for me Uncharted beat it out by just a hair.

Space Marine.

Because THQ actually knows what it's doing with the Games Workshop licence and it was worth every penny to me. And I'm still playing it and buying all it's DLC.

Also because this actually happens.

The Witcher 2 : Assassin of Kings, by far the best game of 2011 for me. Had a great time playing it and loved every second of it.

Star Wars : The Old Republic and Deus Ex Human Revolution, battled it out for the second place but lightsabers > illuminati

Assassin's Creed Revelations. I'm a massive AC fan, and I will always enjoy getting back into the animus. They've really perfected the formula for mission design through focusing on this Ezio trilogy.

Here's to hoping their next adventure is just as enjoyable! :)
