Games that allow me to sneak around and backstab people.
Preferably with a fantasy setting.

Open world games (Fallout series, GTA series, MMO's in general)
Games with a team based multiplayer (Like World in Conflict or L4D1/2)
Games with an intriguing setting (Like the Mass Effect or Fallout universe)
Games with a lot of freedom (Minecraft, GTA series)

Loads of loot!

If only torchlight was a bigger game by itself. Torchlight 2 sounds promising so far.

I love a kick ass story. Special a clever one, with many levels of depths. Games with cool, great write and beautiful executed story line, that just support itself, are just what I love. Great examples are HL2+EP1&2+Portal 1&2, Fallout 3+DLC & New Vegas, Bioshock 1+2, Trine, Beyond Good and Evil, Mass Effect 1+2, Freelancer, Homeworld 2 and Starcraft 1+2. For me, all these games has a great story which you follow, and on which plane of depth are you to you, depending on how much of the cool in-game Easter eggs you find and research you make. Some are better examples that other, but for me, the story are the main drive for me, in most games.
Amen to that!

something with retro charm (Scott Pilgrim, Castle Crashers)

something made by Valve (TF2, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2)

something with a good ol' goofy sense of humor that doesn't take itself too seriously and focuses on fun rather than realism or being "deep" (TF2, Dino D Day, House of the Dead OVERKILL)

something made by Rockstar that isn't GTA related (GTAIV was awesome, but Red Dead blew me AWAY. it really got me paying attention to them, and now I'm hyped as hell for LA Noire.)

Three things, mainly:
1. Fantastically designed worlds (a combination of visuals, science, invented culture/language, and attention to detail)
2. A focus on atmosphere
3. Pirates, musketeers, or other fabulously-costumed sword/gun fighters

An open world that I'm free to destroy at my leisure without having to do silly things like story missions or escort anythings. (That's what I mostly did in Prototype, killing millions of innocent people)

An RPG with great mythos and complex characters. This is counterbalanced with a hatred of level systems (they are so damn archaic and boring now), DOT mages (nukular mages ftw >:D) and fixed class systems (classes should be abolished, way too limiting).

I would love an RPG (single player or MMO) that has a similar skill system to EVE Online, that would be a first day buy with collectors editions and shit.

Complex characters and heartfelt stories. Any game or work the creators put a lot of care into making tend to be my favorites. I found most of the stuff I like in Japanese games.

Pseudo-science and humor.

I would have added "lots of detail and backstory" before having played BioWare games. I really don't know what's it about BioWare and me. All their strong point that are listed by various people online should make me love their games, and while the gameplay is solid, I never found their world, characters and overall gamedesign, including storytelling and dialogue options, ever engaging or interesting. It's really weird.

I'd have to say, a dark, deppressing atmosphere. I loved Bioshock, and Stalker. But sometimes I'll get games like Myst or Amnesia, just because they have this really cool world that sorta creeps you out, but I never finish them.
Same, along with any game that has an amazingly detailed world and backstory (Fallout, Oblivion, etc.), or any game that has an amazing replay value, like Left 4 Dead. I'm usually a lone wolf, so most games I play need a strong single-player component, which is what has kept me away from Call of Duty (Left 4 Dead is one exception to this, and as of yet, I'm not quite sure why.) I've been reaching into the realm of free MMO's, like Dungeon Fighter Online and Mabinogi (Both made by Nexon). Each has good gameplay and each conforms to at least one of my previously listed criteria. Of course, enjoying writing as a whole means games that are very well written and intelligently presented means that I'm likely to get it. Mass Effect as a series especially appeals to me on account of the way the story's structured, where the stage is set for the player's choices. Alan Wake stunned me with it's writing style and presentation as well.

As a summary, big, complex worlds, intelligent and well-written plots and/or characters, uniqueness, replay value... any game that has at least 2 of these things is something I want.

This answer was longer than I expected to write, hah.

Co-op shooters are my general weakness but if that shooter is realistic then I'm all over that.

Game Examples: Battlefield 3, Operation Flashpoint Red River

There's a handful of things that will get me to buy a game no matter what:

1) It's built in the Warhammer 40k universe
2) It's got an intriguing gimmick or story premise
3) It's real purdy
